Currently playtesting Mars Tactics, It’s sort of like Red Faction combined with XCOM, in that it’s about a worker’s strike on Mars that escalated into a full-blown uprising, but it works on turn-based squad tactics combined with a planetary strategic & logistics system.

Idk why they give me an option to play as the bourgeois though, I’ll never use it. Other than that, it’s pretty damn great.

I played the beta, the combat is refreshingly different (does not seem similar to the FFG Rogue Trader rules). I had so much fun with it, that I stopped so I dont spoil it when it comes out.

How’s the atmosphere? The trailers seemed a bit cartoony, which isn’t really an issue given how wacky 40k often is, but does it convey the gloom and doom of it?

I’m still playing Dyson Sphere Program when I have time but it’s been busy. I got my sphere mostly done in my home planet and have a sphere design in mind for my next but I need to get endgame white science on farm first before that. I think I’m actually starting to lose interest in the game which is fine sing I got a few hundred hours in. That’s rare for my attention span.

My kid and I finished Mario Odyssey on this playthrough recently. He ended up playing most of the second half and was knocking out levels on his own. Can’t lie I was both impressed and proud of him. He’s actually currently working through postgame stuff now which I didn’t even know existed.

I’m still not done with Antimatter Dimensions… I’m on the last mechanic and about halfway through it but I think I’m ready to be finished with it.

Noice. Dyson Sphere Program sounds 'ight. Right up my alley, even. Tbh, strategy games don’t do it for me, but that one sounds good. Also, damn, Super Mario Odyssey is also a great game! Glad for your kid.

I have mentioned DSP in the past on here. Elevator pitch: if you like automation and fine tuning systems and machines and also like space and planets then it’s worth checking out. It’s Factorio… IN SPAAAAAAAAACE!!!

I’ve have issues with Mario games in the past(looking at you Mario 64) and I also think Nintendo kind of sucks with their more questionable decisions in the industry involving old games and online but I think Odyssey really is something special. The movement is great and the platforming is very approachable. It really does a lot of things right.

Nintendo isn’t even the worse in the business; it’s just particularly their stinginess when it comes to their past games that’s more noticable (whereas their anti-union practices go unnoticed). But of course, I don’t care about the “fandom;” I care about the workers. And the workers don’t get it so nice at Nintendo…

But again: they aren’t the worst game company to grace “consumers.”

Tbh I wasn’t even aware of their anti-union practices so you are correct about that going unnoticed.

And like I have their entire catalog up to N64 downloaded for my emulators so that isn’t even really an issue. I should focus my removed and energy to their approach to unions methinks.

I feel like automation games strike a very different itch than traditional strategy games. The goal is (generally) not to build up to defeat some enemy but just to build for the sake of building even more. As a kid I always loved strategy games for the base building, but never liked the fighting my enemy part so much. I think that is why I really enjoy the automation and city builder genres.

Some have combat, but they are almost always secondary to the core of the game. Dyson has no combat yet, but it is coming in the near future. Still will be totally optional though.

DSP is my favourite of all the factory games and first one I recommend to people. I like the clean scifi aesthetic, it is probably the best visuals of a game in that genre, just seeing the dyson swarms form into a sphere over the horizon is really pretty. The devs seem like genuinely awesome people who give clear updates, plus I like to support Chinese game devs.

I am honestly not super interested in the upcoming combat update, because I never like the base defense aspect of those games.

The game is absolutely stunning at times. And yes big support for Chinese dev team.

I’m also not really interested in the combat update but you will be able to just turn it off. I sat on Factorio for the longest time because I didn’t know you can make a seed without biters. I only wanna stress about bottlenecks and not tower defense mechanics that I’m not even good at to begin with lol.

    Playing Now:

Rimworld, again. Basically any gaps between any other games, I start up a new Rimworld campaign. My most played game of all time at this point.

    Completed Recently:

Friendly Neighborhood: Survival horror game but with muppets. I initially dismissed it as a FNAF clone, but it is much closer to a Biohazard game. Fun, not long at all, which is a plus in my books these days. Might play it more later to get more endings.

FFXVI: Was okay, probably falls smack dab in the middle of my FF tier hierarchy. Definitely had some major issues with it, but it ended up exceeding my expectations in other areas. Story was interesting enough to make me want to see it through to the end.

Everyone’s playing it these days for a reason. The game is the definition of replayability and when a new(successful) colony can give you an engaging experience for dozens of hours it’s always a staple in my library when I don’t know what else to play. The game is variable and engaging from start to finish with just vanilla alone and adding the vibrant modding community just makes it that much better.

It’s an almost infinite content platform with mods, and it has a massive modding community. Can be sci-fi, western, fantasy, whatever.

It did take me a few tries for it to “click” for me, but it is easily my favourite game I have ever played by now.

Supposedly due to the way the game was made and structured.

There’s no workable official Fallout 3 in existence. Imagine that. You can look it up, but not file of Fallout 3 works unless you have mods.

          Something about the Gamebryo engine…

I’ve never modded it. I just like running around. More or less.

I’ve completed all the other quest lines, I think.

One of the great things about Skyrim (and Fallout 4) is the audio and text can be changed to Spanish. It’s great for picking up vocab. Some of that vocab is a bit random, granted. But the repetition of basic items and the ability to make NPC’s say the same lines over and over again. I’ll never forget ‘lata’ (tin/can)!

Yes, I’ve been learning it for a while now. One of the things that makes it easier is switching to a Spanish game or TV series when life is busy. It’s a bit less intense than reading and going through the grammar, but it keeps me in the language.

Very well, yes. Otherwise, I get burnt out. I can’t maintain ‘studying’ Spanish every day on top of being an adult and looking after myself. But I can always dedicate half an hour (or more) to escapism. It’s not so much the time, but the energy required for in-depth ‘studying’. So games and TV can really help with that.

If I come across an unknown word on TV, I ignore it. In a game, it depends. In a cut-scene? I ignore it. During gameplay, I usually try to work out its meaning. Sometimes, if I know enough to keep playing, I don’t even worry about meaning, I just keep playing. If I come across the word three or more times and cannot figure it out, I look it up. If the word is frustrating me, I look it up. Occasionally, I write down these words, with a translation, aiming to keep a list – but it never lasts long and I usually forget about my lists quite quickly.

In a game like Skyrim or Fallout 4, you know exactly what e.g. the nouns are because you can see them. So if you look at a carrot and the label on-screen says zanahoria, it’s obvious it’s a carrot. Words like ‘habilidades’ (abilities) and ‘otorga’ (grants/gives) are transparent. I know what they mean; but it’s strange – I wouldn’t necessarily be able to say what the equivalent English word is. I don’t worry about it.

To build vocabulary, I do ‘listening-reading’ (see my post in !learnspanish@lemmygrad.ml), I read on Kindle with the Spanish dictionary set up and click unknown words for an instant translation (I don’t do this with every unknown word), and I read parallel texts. I also use google translate to look up unknown words if I hear or read them ‘in the wild’. To speed up this process, start with texts that you have read before or texts on topics with which you are familiar. You will be able to guess the meaning of words more easily, which means you won’t need to look up so many words.

Note that I rarely do this, but a fast way to build vocabulary is through word lists:

                  1. Three columns. Write seven-to-ten random words in the target language column 1. Translate them to a known language in column 2. Then translate back to the target language in column 3. Then write the words in the target language in column 1 of a new table.
                  2. The next day, look at each word and see if you can remember it. If so, write it in column 2 in a colour (e.g. blue). If you have to look it up, write it in column 2 in a different colour (e.g. green). Translate column 2 in column 3. Start a new column 1 in a new table, adding the ‘green’ words. Add new words up to seven-to-ten, in total. If you had to look up e.g. three words, you can add four-to-seven new words.
                  3. The next day, go again. Repeat.
                  4. Each week, do one long list of all the words that you remembered (written in blue). You can review the trickier words in this list once a month.

Paul Nation wrote a good guide on learning languages: https://www.wgtn.ac.nz/lals/resources/paul-nations-resources/paul-nations-publications/publications/documents/foreign-language_1125.pdf . The same thing in Spanish: https://www.wgtn.ac.nz/lals/resources/paul-nations-resources/paul-nations-publications/publications/documents/spanish-version-what-you-need-to-know-to-learn-a-foreign-language.pdf . I’ve been playing a lot of Saints Row 2 lately. Very nostalgic for me, I played it a lot about 10 years ago. I like the San Andreas style of winning back territory. I also like the activities in the game. Great game. I also like Vampire Survivors, a newish game that plays like an old-school survival arcade game.

Playing Chained Echoes right now, it’s pretty fun and feels a lot like Chrono Trigger. Definitely recommend for anybody who likes old school JRPGs.

Sifu was another fun game I played recently, really good fighting mechanics that feel very fluid and look cinematic.

Afterparty was a fun story based game I can recommend for people looking for something casual.

I find I tend to like indie games nowadays because they tend to be shorter and mechanics are simpler, so you can just pick it up and play it for a bit without having to really get into it.

My fav genres are roguelike and story based games, in particular I really liked pretty much everything Telltale games made. I find they always have excellent writing in their games.

I used to play a lot of FPS and RTS games, but last RTS I played was SC2, and for FPS it was Titanfall 2 which was a ton of fun.

I’ve been playing a lot of Wii U Super Smash Bros. I can finally beat level 9s as a random character more than half of the time.

I’m still on ToTK. It fits well into the hour-long intervals I have available right now.

I’ve reached the point where I’m afraid to actually be done with Tears of the Kingdom. I suppose I actually need to so I can get Pikmin 4. I’m a longtime Pikmin fan so this feels like a fever dream actually having Nintendo do another big push on the series.

Also intermittently playing New Pokemon Snap. Shameless plus, but sub to !pokemon_snap@lemmy.piperservers.net and see pics from my playthrough and add your own.

In the retro category, my consoles are crying in neglect. I’ve only been playing couch multiplayer intermittently when friends come over, usually Didddy Kong Racing on N64

I love me some JRPGs but haven’t really played any good ones in a while. I do know Atlus is releasing a P3 remake and a Persona-like game next year so I’m suuuuuper hyped for that.

Also while not a JRPG, I’m really excited for Starfield. There are some other games I’m excited for but can’t remember off the top of my head rn.

I’ve been super conflicted on starting a P3 FES playthrough with the remake on the horizon. I entered into the series with Persona 4 and loved it but never got the chance to try the earlier entries. I know I can mod to change it but the aspect of not being able to control your other characters was always a huge turnoff for me. Maybe I’ll finally just jump into Yakuza: Like a Dragon instead since it’s been burning a hole through my backlog

Yeah the AI is a bit braindead but if not being able to control your characters is a deal breaker, P3P does allow you to control them.

I played Like a Dragon, the story and characters were really compelling, I think you might like it.

Funny. Last time I was in one of these threads, I was asked what game I was looking forward to. It was long enough ago that my answer was “BoTW 2.” My answer to the current question? Tears of The Kingdom.
