I like SMTV, but if you are coming from Persona it is a VERY different experience. Persona is a much more narrative spinoff series from the original SMT franchise. SMT games you are typically alone, with just a party of the monsters you recruit to help you. Consequently there isn’t a whole lot of dialog. There is some story, but in most SMT games it tends to be very back-heavy.

SMT games do tend towards bleak, depressing and extremely difficult. They usually do have multiple narrative paths/endings to give it some replay value. They are really for people who enjoy those kinds of gameplay systems first and foremost.

  • The absolute easiest way for me in general is Stremio + a Debrid service (ala Real-Debrid). Not only is it super safe and simple, but the UI of Stremio is way more user friendly than most actual streaming platforms.

Admittedly there is a fee for a debrid service, but it pays for itself in about 45 minutes.

  • Appreciate the sentiment, but a change of leadership wouldn’t be a big change for us honestly. There are plenty of issues with our relationship with the US that have persisted over multiple administrations from multiple parties. Such as the mafia-esque protection money we pay for the honour of providing the US bases.

If anything, there is an accelerationist point of view we could take that the current souring of relations could spur Japan to work with real allies for a change. The LDP has not shown much desire to do so, admittedly.

  • It’s not great; the rice shortage continues to hit us pretty hard. I don’t eat rice at home anymore really, pretty much only at lunch at my office cause they supply it there.

Wages continue to stagnant (I am fairly lucky my industry has done reasonably well and I have actually got raises) and govt has decided that a slight hike to income tax for childless people is the way to go. Consumption tax continues to go up, food gets more and more expensive; greatly outpacing most people’s wage increases.

I was really hopeful at the beginning of the whole tariff song and dance that we would recognize our future should be with China, not the US, but our politicians seem to be holding to their guns. Though at least with a decidedly less pro-US voice.

We all know that to be truly free, you must be free of the evils of literacy and uh…education. That’s why America is so free with their 21% illiteracy rate! That is 21% more freedom!

  • French…kind of. My father speaks French as well as English, so I had exposure to it growing up. I took it in high school as I wanted to improve on that, but eventually dropped it. I can sorta get by conversationally, but I wouldn’t be able to work in a French speaking country. I would honestly like to get back to learning it more again someday. I usually speak to my father in French still.

I studied Korean for a couple years, but it has gotten really rusty too. In grad school I spent a while in ROK and DPRK and was pretty good at Korean then. It’s actually one of the easiest languages I have studied, but through sheer neglect I have gotten way worse at it. I should probably brush this up too.

Most of my language learning time has been focused on Chinese these days.

  • Part of me has kept hope that this is the driving force that pushes my country to tightening trade agreements with China. There was some initial activity in that direction with the processor materials trade between Japan, South Korea and China but I was hoping more would come out of that.

I get it is a very difficult call in the short term, those are our two biggest trading partners, but I hope that Japan realises the longterm prospects with China are much more favorable. That much foresight is not something Japanese politicians are typically known for however. Much more likely we bend the knee until our own economy is entirely buried.

  • AddfwyntoGamesDo you like JRPGs and if yes, why?

Some of my favourite games were JRPGs growing up. I always had the impression that while CRPGs gave the player a lot more freedom, I found JRPGs were more about telling one really good curated story.

Games like the early Final Fantasies, Chrono Trigger, and basically anything Squaresoft put out “back in the day” were among my favourite gaming experience.

These days, whether due to my tastes changing, more limited time, or just the genre shifting in a way that doesn’t appeal to me, I play very very few JRPGs. A lot have gone the route of the heavily anime-inspired fanservice vehicles that just aren’t really what I ever liked about the genre.

I still will play the heck out of a Persona game though.
