I’m confused as to how the population feels about Lukashenko, and Putin I guess. Western media claims they have rigged elections but I’m very sceptical of that.

They don’t need to rig an election, he really have 80% of support consistently for years because he’s about as much based as it is possible to be for the capitalist state leader. It’s just that capitalist core and its periphery have no democracy whatsoever so we tend to view any elections above 40-45% with suspicion.

It’s the usual dishonest twisting of reality, poisoning the well, and “when did you stop beating your wife” type questions from the so-called “reporter” and he is having none of it. Then all the libs on Twitter tried to pretend like this interview was proof that he is some kind of unhinged maniacal dictator. Honestly i think more anti-imperialist leaders need to be speaking like this to the scum from the imperialist propaganda networks. Putin and Xi are always way too diplomatic. Lukashenko reminds me of a slavic Ortega or maybe a Maduro (sadly not quite Chavez who literally called W. Bush the devil at the UN)…except sadly he’s not (or at least he doesn’t openly admit it though i think it’s fairly clear he at least has Soviet sympathies, more so than Putin) a socialist.

I would love to visit Belarus one day when it isn’t being threatened. Russia too (I plan on taking Russian when I do my masters). I would visit all the Soviet Union countries but most seemed to have been occupied by fascists.

IIRC definitely has “liberalized” significantly less than the ones NATO has on a leash, which of course is the economic cardinal sin to the West.

I can’t wait to visit Belarus, I was in Russia a couple of times and while there is still a lot of Soviet aesthetics and of course Lenin Mausoleum, there is also a lot of conservative pushing from the government to remove many things related to communism and to put tsarist imagery everywhere. Meanwhile there is Lenin in front of government building in Minks and Soviet flag every now and then.

Lukashenko is honestly the best post-Soviet leader, not really much of a compliment considering the bar is literally just being better than Nazi apologists but he’s at least protected the country from the level of neoliberal looting the rest of them suffered. Not much, but at least it’s something.

That’s a very interesting second paragraph. I sometimes get in discussion with friends and Belarus is seen as the “ugly duckling” of east Europe. Definitely some “how does he dare say that? He should shut up and let us tell him what to think”.
I mean, some of his opinions are shit. It doesn’t matter. He doesn’t have power to effect change globally, and it’s their country. Belarusians should decide what happens in their country. It’s not for us to police what their politicians are saying under the guise of regime change.

Was gonna share this as well. Interesting when Chinese communists are discussing Belarusian economics they refer to it as Market Socialist, although Belarus is never included in what western MLs consider AES. It’s very complicated and could be considered more liberal than China without the end goal being to move toward communism, but it’s certainly not neoliberal either, like the “freedom fighter” opposition wants it to be.

Leader is better imo. Just too much negative connotation with “ruler”. Belarus isn’t some monarchy or something. It’s a modern capitalist economy with large state intervention. While it is capitalist, democracy is a spectrum, and Lukashenko definitely represents the people more than some puppet like Biden or Kamala Harris. He is like a socially conservative soc dem.
