The problem
471 communities on lemmygrad but many are inactive. We want to revitalise them and make them active again!
The solution
We’re gonna give communities with inactive moderation to you, the users. This will allow you to edit the sidebar, sticky posts, and in general provide a sense of pride and accomplishment.
The goal is that you will do something with the community to help it be active if it’s not, which includes posting there. But no stress, we’re not setting up quotas.
You can claim any community if:
- the moderator or moderators have not been active for 6 months or more.
- the community is moderated by one or more administrators of Lemmygrad.
For example, you could claim !me_ira@lemmygrad.ml because one moderator is an admin, and the other two have not been active over a year.
A community can be active in posts and you can still have it, the only criteria we look at is moderation presence.
How to do that
To claim your community, post a comment here detailing:
- a link to the community you’d like (you can use the ! character to link automatically as you type, just give it a second to load)
- also notify the current moderator/s (you can tag them with the @ character). Some may just be lurking.
- why you are able to claim it
- what your plans are for this community and
- why you would be a good fit for it
We are looking to give communities to non-moderators first.
What happens next
We review your application, it’s not an automatic grant. We wait for the owner/s to say something and if they don’t, then we’ll name you as mod alongside them first (you will need to comment somewhere in the community for us to do that). Down the line if you feel like it, we can talk about making you sole moderator.
Some context if you’re interested in that
We have many legacy communities from the creation of lemmygrad and then the great Genzedong migration from 6 months ago (which is why it’s our cutoff point). At the same time, us admins were the most active users on the site for a long time and so we created a lot of communities too as they were needed.
We are moving towards self-moderation and as the site grows, the admins should take a step back in moderating content. We also hope that we can revitalise those communities that have been left to abandon to increase the content (both in quality and quantity) on lemmygrad.
(This post has been heavily edited to cut down on length)

Pinging @LeftWingPath@lemmygrad.ml to see if they are okay with giving their community away first.

I’ll name you comod to start with, just send a comment somewhere on that community. In a month’s time if the owner hasn’t said anything remind me again and I’ll hand the community over to you formally.

I got you fam.

@chinawatcherwatcher@lemmygrad.ml has been given the music community, if you have ideas or want to comod with them, you can contact them directly.
I’m also totally open giving away my communities provided you do something with them!
!mentalhealth@lemmygrad.ml @princesscelestia@lemmygrad.ml
The mod hasn’t participated in 3 months on LG.
I want to build out some educational materials for psychology and mental health support for the community here and beyond, including links to videos, articles and self-guided treatment, as well as resources for connecting with mental health support (peer support, psychology and psychiatry).
I would like the forum itself to be for questions and advice for people around their mental health issues, as I find peer support to be incredibly helpful as a tool for navigating mental health issues.
I focused my formal education on data and stats in social sciences and have lived experience with mental health issues. I think I give decent advice and feedback and love to compile resource lists and connecting others with information that could help them through a difficult time.
3 months is a bit short, but we can wait a bit to see if celestia gets back to us and if not, possibly name you co-mod as your plan for the community is in line with its purpose.
Co-modding people for it in the shortterm is a good idea, you could make this a 1 month thing on that basis and then do the removal of the original mod only after the full time expires.
Wait, you are also a cat?
Cat goes awoooo.
Yeah I thought it might be, but wanted to at least put my name out there for it, I just wanna see the page usefulness expanded so I don’t care really how that happens lol
Hey comrade, any updates on this?
With no updates from celestia in a month, I can name you mod. Just make a comment there first otherwise I can’t lol
Done!
I have a handful of communities I’d like to add moderators to;
If you cannot find anyone, I would not mind helping out with !Vexillogy it is a hobby of mine. Same goes for !Star Trek, it is one of my favorite shows and I know it is over used but it got me through some stuff.
if you put a comment on those communities i’ll mod you
Done, I have one in the “flag of the people’s socialist republic of Wisconsin” and one in “Based O’Brien”
!vexillology name is misspelled unfortunately…
I’d like to moderate !portugal@lemmygrad.ml (@Pirato@lemmygrad.ml )
I’m an active member of the Portuguese Communist Party. My plans for the sub would be to post the Party’s articles/news and enable a discussion space for every Portuguese communist/anyone interested.
Since you both seem to be from the same party I just named you co-mod. Then a month down the line notify me again if you want to be sole owner of the community.
That is more than enough. Thank you!
I have Green and Extreme and Send in the Tanks which were meant to be replacements for refugees from their respective reddit equivalents. Unfortunately this didn’t work out and I’m not sure how to revitalise it, so if anyone is from the original subreddits please tell me, and hopefully we can find a way to make it work.
i’ve never moderated a community before, but i would be willing to try moderating !music@lemmygrad.ml. looks pretty dead, not sure what the mod @Karlovious@lemmygrad.ml thinks about it
mostly i would be interested in framing music within a marxist framework, along the dialectic of theory (music theory, or how we think about music; no 19th century theory required) and practice (the act of playing AND listening to music). i don’t have a lot of spare time, but ideally i would like a community that bridges the gap between formally and informally trained, experienced and inexperienced; a space where people can share music they’re listening to, and basically just share their thoughts about it
as far as why i might be good for it, i have a musical background and like talking/learning about music theory, practice, and history. you can see this by looking at my comment history here lol. i’m also pretty open to all kinds or levels of experiences and different types of music theoretical frameworks.
If Karlovious chimes in we can ask them about the rest of their communities too. Otherwise I might still be able to get in touch with them to ask them directly.
sure, just let me know!
Karlovious has notified me all of their communities are up for grabs so I can name you sole mod there, you just need to make a post there.
nice, here is my comment there that i just made, let me know if that works
named you mod. Get back to me in a month if you want the community to yourself, though I don’t think Karlovious will be coming back any time soon considering they gave me the go ahead to redistribute their communities.
thanks! o7
I’d like to become a moderator of !leftcommunism@lemmygrad.ml; @alfa@lemmygrad.ml hasn’t posted anything in years. Likewise for !trotskyism@lemmygrad.ml; @beingjump@lemmygrad.ml has been inactive for a year.
I’m not really a left communist or a Trotskyist, but I do have some interest in the theories and I am probably the Lemmygrad regular most sympathetic to either. I occasionally come across articles that I don’t necessarily agree with but nevertheless find interesting.
ETA: I should also mention that I’d rather neither of them fall into the hands of somebody utterly antipathic to their theories.
We really want to give communities to non-moderators in priority, but if nobody else is interested and even using those two communities it can be discussed to give them to you. The best course of action is probably to bring it up with the rest of the admin team so I’ll do just that.

It’s a bit capricious, on desktop I just type the first couple letters and give it a second to load the results. Then click or press tab on whichever result is the right one. It will automatically transform it to a markdown hyperlink.
The situation may improve when HexBear devs finish implementing its special functionalities.
We need to get them ready for moderation for when hexbear federates x)
I’d like to moderate !drugs@lemmygrad.ml along with the current mod @Hagels_Bagels@lemmygrad.ml if they’re still active.
I’m interested in discussions about personal experiences (good and bad) with drug use and compiling research about benefits and side effects of any substance. Also interested in talking about drug epidemics in various countries around the world and their causes and effects on the population. If someone has more ideas for the community, feel free to post them.
Edit: the current sidebar of the community is a great summarization, I have nothing to add to it and will just focus on cultivating discussions in that direction.
I think a revival of c/drugs would be a very good thing. I’m not super active on Lemmy - just log in every now and then to check the conversations going on. I have no objections to you becoming a mod, sounds like a good idea!
Nice! Glad that you’re on board with it.
With confirmation I’ve named you co-mod. In a month or so you can see with Bagels again if they’re okay giving up the community and I can name you sole mod. If that’s what you want.
Thanks!
Could I get !red_pride@lemmygrad.ml and !lgbt@lemmygrad.ml with the intent of merging them?
@Comrade_Leah@lemmygrad.ml on Red Pride hasn’t been active for 8 months, and @CommieWalrus@lemmygrad.ml and @Leonidas@lemmygrad.ml on the LGBT community haven’t been active for over 3 years.
Yeah sounds good, just give the owners a couple days just in case and then make a comment in both communities so I can transfer them to you.
I’ve made a comment in !lgbt@lemmygrad.ml over here and a comment in !red_pride@lemmygrad.ml over here.
done
Thanks

No problem, the thread remains open. We just have to page @elim95@lemmygrad.ml and see if they’re okay having a comod.

Yo I never got back to you, but I named you mod.

Hello! There are some communities that I’d like to adopt:
- !japan@lemmygrad.ml:
- It was made in 2021 (I assume, judging from the day @orc@lemmygrad.ml’s account was created), saw only 1 post (Even then, it was made 3 months ago; so many years after it was created), and the sole owner and moderator (@orc@lemmygrad.ml) doesn’t seem to be active on the 'grad anymore.
- I aim to hopefully try and make it more relevant again by giving it the c/Korea treatment:
- Sharing any articles about Japanese Politics I may come across, creating posts asking about the state of left-wing in Japan, sharing any Japanese Leftist spaces I may come across, in order to foster discussion.
- In addition, I may try to translate Leftist Works written in Japanese should my Japanese skills become well-endowed in the future.
- There seem to be a few Japanese Comrades (or well, comrades who live in Japan anyway) lurking around and sometimes posting in the 'grad. I hope they’ll notice the existence of the Japanese community in the 'grad and make it more active as well.
- I feel personally interested in refurbishing the inactive, barren community.
- !touhou@lemmygrad.ml:
- Both moderators’ ( @tribunodelaplebe@lemmygrad.ml and @leninenjoyer@lemmygrad.ml ) last signs of activity were 5 months ago. Being someone who has a keen interest in Touhou Project (one of my writing projects involve spreading Socialism in Gensokyo) and fairly active in the 'grad, I would like to become a moderator of the Touhou community.
- Like with !japan@lemmygrad.ml, I wish to refurbish it, giving it more ML undertones. I also wish to share any Touhou media and ML Touhou Imagery I may come across or create; as well as fostering discussion about Touhou Media and Gensokyo.
- As I’ve mentioned previously, I have a keen interest towards Touhou Project.
That touhou community can never get off the ground it seems 😅
i mean the anime subcomm sees activity sometimes, but remains inactive most of the time. so i wouldn’t count on there to be many touhou fans in lemmygrad proper lol. maybe if non-lemmygraders discover the lemmygrad touhou subcomm we might see some surge in activity.
(i was also thinking of making a post about touhou games, about touhou 19 {recent touhou game} and rebranding it to look more communist)
sure sounds great, you just need to link me to a comment you make in both communities.
Thank you for taking my request into account, Critical! 🙇♀️
Comment made in !japan@lemmygrad.ml: https://lemmygrad.ml/comment/393700
Comment made in !touhou@lemmygrad.ml: https://lemmygrad.ml/comment/682925
all done!
Once again, thank you. 🙇♀️
- !japan@lemmygrad.ml:
piracy sounds fun… I will look through the communities tomorrow…
