We’ve approved I don’t know how many new comrades here since the announcement that Reddit will kill its API access.
If you don’t know where to start posting on lemmygrad, this is a good thread to start in! You can also ask questions you have about federation or our instance.
Welcome!
The current lore is:
We are all feds on lemmygrad, but you get to choose your agency.
Greetings!
I found out about Lemmy and Lemmygrad today in a Reddit post about the new API changes and came here to talk about left politics, share material and have fun. I have a lot of experience with digital preservation, cats are my favorite animals and I am allergic to liberalism.
Welcome to Lemmygrad! :)
Welcome comrade! Hope you have fun with us all here!
Also any particular type of cat your favorite? Or just house cats? I’m very fond of lynxes myself.

Those are very cool too!

Sounds good.
Hello! I’ve just joined recently :) From the PRC and I’m hired by the MSS to shill for the CPC on here, glad to meet you all :D. I’m also an editor on prolewiki under the same username
I love Prolewiki. Thanks for all your efforts there.
Haha, you’re welcome! :)
Js wanted to say i like reading ur replies on r/thedeprogram, Welcome to Lemmygrad! :D
:D Thank you!
I didn’t know Gojira hanged out at there. Nice.
Ah, someone from Tankie Bunker. Howdy.
I didn’t realize that Lemmygrad had a new flood of users. That’s pretty sweet!
I’m sorta new, and my account is a few months old. I loved GenZedong on Reddit and got really pissed off when it was removed for being too based. I also saw a few posts that reeked of liberalism and it pissed me off so much, I deleted all social media for good. However, I wanted to continue to consume more leftist content, so I found Lemmygrad from a GZD archive. All in all, I have been lurking for less than a year, and barely making posts and comments this past few months.
People are flooding in because reddit is going to start charging exorbitant prices to use its API, effectively killing 3rd party client apps.
So that’s why. The sooner that pedophilic, liberal-infested, Western-centric, Anime-filth-filled “social-media platform” dies, the better.
anime-filth-filled
hey don’t denigrate an entire art medium like that >:(
You have a few gems like Cowboy Bebop and plenty of good films and shows, but I feel like the vast majority is literally just “OMG LITTLE GIRL MEGA BOOBA MAGIC EXPLOSION FANSERVICE”
Not really, especially in recent years. Probably partially thanks to China, but the fan service stuff is getting increasingly rare. There is still some, but it is mostly tolerable.
Really? Prove it. Now you have me intrigued.
It helps a lot to have someone review anime and tell you which ones you can skip. I’ve recommended the anime feminist blog here before. https://www.animefeminist.com/
ooooh, thanks for the suggestion! I want to get back into anime but it’s hard to filter through the trashy stuff.
I’ll check it out. Thanks!
Vast majority of recent anime, anyway. There are still lots of gems made in the past. Some well-known, but most remain an unknown niche. (This also happens when most anime is made these days without much fanservice - either they become niche or ‘too boring’ for some people)
Guess that explains why 99% of the anime I watch are all niche media, lmao.
Record of Lodoss War?
…ok, I’ll admit, I never heard of this one.
:(
Its API? What’s that?
Application program interface.
right, gotcha
Lemmy is gonna get overrun with libs when it happens.
Lemmy is already overrun by libs. If not for Yogthos it would be mainly techbro posts.
I have noticed the ridiculous amount of libs while poking around other instances. Lemmygrad is a shining beacon of hope. When I first discovered Lemmy and the Fediverse, my first thought was I had to find a Marxist instance to call home. Hopefully most comrades go through the same thought process when making the switch.
Similar situation with Mastodon. Once you find an instance that’s quick to ban the garbage, it’s a great time, but until that point it can be a bit frustrating.
is there an ML mastodon instance? I wasn’t able to find one, so I settled down on .social and just manually filtered out lib hashtags (annoying).
I haven’t found one yet and I don’t think there is (yet).
But if I could, I’d make one ASAP.
Any examples? I tried going to mastodon, to see what’s the fuss was all about, and the main page was a bunch of pro-Ukraine propaganda, intermixed with generic lib stuff
Don’t just go to the main instance and find other groups and communities on there so you can customize your feed and following.
Mastodon is great, but it takes awhile; it’s also far less toxic than Twitter.
I’m at the union instance. It’s great!
R.I.P Lemmy.
Fortunately, if there’s an instance of insufferable liberals lemmygrad could always defederate from them. Assuming they haven’t already defederated from lemmygrad.
Lemmy becoming more widely adopted shouldn’t necessarily mean lemmygrad will have to spend a bunch of time fending off libs.
Yeah, that’s the beauty of the distributed approach. Every instance can decide its own rules and what other instances is chooses to federate with.
Mastodon is good for this reason.
yup
Seems to me that they are more repulsed by us than we are by them :)
Hello, I’ve been here for a little bit but anyways, I gained a small following by China- and DPRK-posting on Tiktok, I keep getting banned there so I’m focusing more on Substack and Youtube. I mostly break down western propaganda about AES countries. Hopefully people here enjoy my content, I’m trying not to spam or anything.
Can I check out your videos comrade? And have you thought about making videos for ProleWiki?
Sure, my Youtube is here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCa6sZIs9w57R78AAnIaKNNw
I would make videos for any- and every-one who wants to watch, on or for any leftist platform. I don’t have much of a following, barely any subs on Youtube and the 3k+ followers I had on each of my tiktok accounts doesn’t extend outside of the app at all.
We had 385k views on a video for TikTok, but after that our reach got severely reduced, probably because we didn’t post enough or didn’t post in the right format. You can see our profile here: https://www.tiktok.com/@prolewiki
TikTok is a very insular platform, they barely leave it because it has everything they want on it. What we found from our usage of TikTok is that on 385k views, you had maybe 10 of them check out the website. Compared to Twitter where on 100k views, we can get 100-200 people checking out the website on threads (with a call to action).
There’s probably something we can work out, I’ll have to think about it and get back to you if that sounds good.
Yep, same here, I’ve got several videos in the hundreds of thousands of views, but that doesn’t translate to anything off platform. Tiktok is relatively easy to grow on but unless you get a massive following it will stay almost completely self-contained. It’s not conducive to the in-depth content I like to make, since videos over 3 minutes long don’t get any views.
I’m about to start making a series of videos doing in-depth debunks of the most common DPRK myths, like Otto Warmbier, the ‘3 generations of punishment’, etc.
There’s probably something we can work out, I’ll have to think about it and get back to you if that sounds good.
Sure, let me know.
You keep getting banned on TikTok? Why exactly?
Brigades by anti-communists. Mostly, and specifically, PraxBen’s community. You can’t post anything even remotely polarizing on Tiktok. It happens to pretty much all leftist creators of any size, like Midwestern Marx or even Hasanabi.
It’s not worth the effort to try to make non-combative content, so I gave up.
Midwestern Marx and Hasanabi both suck.

Hi everyone, late to this thread. I’ve joined in order to interact more in ML spaces and hopefully sharpen my usage of theory in daily life. This place served an integral role in radicalizing me and I’m thankful for that.
I’ve first discovered Lemmygrad during the first days of the Ukraine debacle, and continued to visit it and began asking questions, then became a full ML after reading theory.
Happy to have you along with us for the ride! Lemmygrad was also very integral in breaking the last vestiges of my old liberal viewpoints and radicalizing me.
Any particular piece of theory your favorite so far?
Well, at the moment I’m trying to apply Dialectical Materialism in my daily life, so works such as Stalin’s Dialectical and Historical materialism have been useful. Anarchism or Socialism has been also a pleasant read, I think it helps clear up the willing misinterpretations of Marxism anarchists do.
Though regarding conciseness, I like Mao’s “Combat Liberalism”. Currently I’m reading Lenin and then I plan to read more Marx, perhaps economics.
You shouldn’t delve into Das Kapital if these are your first years as an ML. Wait to Year 5.
NOICE
Also if y’all enjoy Lemmygrad, we benefit greatly from word of mouth. Tell your friends about the site, to help us grow.
The more people that use Lemmygrad, the better the content will be.
I always promote it on Twitter.
I’m Forever, i’m a bi ML from the US, working on a CS major rn. I’ve had this account for a bit after it was promoted in genzedong but haven’t used it much. here’s to a better website!
Yeah!
Hello, I’m a Texan ML and I’ve heard about lemmy for a long time now, but didn’t know there was an entire instance dedicated to communism, so I’m here now. Just as a lot of others have said, I was motivated to really jump because of reddit’s new nonsense and I’m happy to engage in the discourse :).
Did you come through Twitter?
Understood. I keep promoting Lemmygrad on Twitter.
Thanks! Been browsing all night. I plan to make an introduction post for myself soon, I can’t wait to meet everyone whose content I’ve been absolutely loving.
Quick question, as someone entirely new to federation: Is there a similar ML community to this one for video sharing? Almost like YouTube?
Additionally, to any other new people like myself that may have had trouble logging in: Try typing your username and password out manually, rather than using an auto-filler for your login credentials. Auto-filling did not seem to work for me.
For some reason I was under the impression I could make a post to my own profile, whoops! I’ll do my intro here!
Hi, I’m suggs. I’m a college student at a large public university, and I’ve been involved in a few leftist groups here at my university, but I’m still trying to find one that is actually Marxist. I’d like to share my story of how I was radicalized.
I should also preface this by stating my father is a small business owner, so I have been extremely privileged in my petty bourgeoise upbringing. Despite my mother being a minority in my country, I am cis and white passing, and I recognize the privilege that comes with that.
In high school I fell deep into the alt-right pipeline online, and I crawled through the dankest, most disturbing chan boards as I consumed redpill after redpill. In college, I took Arabic language courses because I thought it would be fun to learn a difficult language. I ended up falling in love with the language and eventually traveled to Jordan in a study abroad program to further my study of the language. On this trip, my reactionary views clashed with my classmates, and I was ostracized throughout the entire trip. I’d experienced moments like this in the past, but this trip is what truly started my reflection on my worldview.
Over the next few years as I struggled in an identity crisis, I fell into a deep depression. After a few years of blowing in the wind and dropping out of college, I reconnected with my cousin. My cousin introduced me to Marxist ideas, and as someone involved in local politics in our city, he introduced me to our local communist party. From there, I consumed literature he recommended, and I branched out and continued studying on my own. I’ve since radicalized many of my family members and most of my friends, and I continue to share what I’ve learned and encourage others to consume literature.
I can’t wait to learn more with the community here. See you all around.
Thanks for sharing your story, I’ve seen this similar trend many times, reactionary people who, once they actually interact with people outside their own societal strata, begin to question their beliefs. I’ve had many friends who were racist, alt-right reactionaries who changed their views once they started to interact with those they supposedly “hated”.
Nice to meet you, Suggs! What are you studying?
Nice to meet you as well, redtea! I’m a year out from finishing my physics undergrad, and I’m hoping to get in the aerospace engineering graduate program at my university after I walk. I couldn’t be more excited to return to classes this August. I miss being in the classroom.
That sounds like a fun career to get into! Have you kept up your Arabic? You could end up doing a fair bit of travelling on company time and dime.
Unfortunately my Arabic has decayed significantly due to my years outside of the classroom, but recently I’ve been doing some of my own studying online in preparation for returning to Arabic class.
A few months back, I went to a small Mediterranean restaurant nearby and chatted with the owner in Arabic. He recommended I come see him at his mosque where he teaches children Arabic, he said he’d love to have me there for classes. I’ve been putting it off, but maybe I should give his number a ring soon.
That sounds like a great opportunity!
There may be an Arabic community on the Grad. There are certainly Arabic speakers. You might be able to get some practice here.
That is quite a journey. Glad to see that you have found yourself. Welcome!
Many MLs are former conservatives and libertarians. It is no big deal. Welcome to the fold.
There is a piece of software called PeerTube which does federated video sharing along the lines of YouTube, but I can’t name an explicitly ML instance off the top of my head. Naturally, hosting a video sharing website like PeerTube is going to be much more resource intensive than a largely text-based message board. It is almost certainly something which would need to be supported by donations.
Is PeerTube still active? Still around? Or was it Invidious that got taken down?
Hello my name is Oppo, and I am your favorite girl my name is short for Opportunities and that is cute.
lmao i was wondering if you named yourself oppo after the mobile phone brand, oppo
The phone brand copied me
Hello comrades!
I’ve actually been lurking here since the GZD quarantine, but thought I’d take this opportunity to finally create an account. Never really been much of a commenter, but I want to participate in the discourse to become a better Marxist. I read a lot but often have a hard time articulating myself in a conversation so want to improve that.
Looking forward to interacting with you all on here!
Happy to have you join! Even though it’s not your forte like you said, I hope you feel included and have fun interacting!
I didn’t actually mention it but I was lurking on and off for months since that quarantine too, although I have to admit I still harbored too many anticommunist sentiments and was more gawking then
I can give you book recommendations.
Cool, I’ve got a ever increasing list of books to read but always happy to have more!
Alright, I’ll get back to you. Hold on.

So let’s say, if you downvote a lib from beehaw that’s commented on lemmy.ml, if it had 6 upvotes before, I think the users of lemmy.ml and any other instance that doesnt block us will see a score of 5 (6 upvotes 1 downvote), but for anyone viewing through beehaw or a different instance that blocks us; will still see a score of 6 with no downvotes
As a famous critic of political economy, I’ve been here a while but inactive. Just jumped back in because I heard there was a mass of insufferable liberals spouting ignorance in the neighborhood due to federation and a small Reddit exodus. Glad to see how this space has developed.
I’m what you might call a communist, if you’ve heard the term before.

Took me a while to get the joke.
Hi! I’m Jakob, and I’m a trans guy living in a very very red (not the good kind) state with my wife. We are both basically MLs (though I need to read more theory :c ). I sneeze when I’m full, I love cats but my wife is allergic so we don’t have any, I listen to a lot of music so I would love to talk about that sometime, and I constantly think about social justice. Every billionaire is bad. Also, you can’t kill me in a way that matters :)
Noice! Did you come through Twitter?
i did! Hbu?
I was inviting people on Twitter.
