We’ve approved I don’t know how many new comrades here since the announcement that Reddit will kill its API access.

If you don’t know where to start posting on lemmygrad, this is a good thread to start in! You can also ask questions you have about federation or our instance.

Welcome!

The current lore is:

We are all feds on lemmygrad, but you get to choose your agency.

    Greetings!

I found out about Lemmy and Lemmygrad today in a Reddit post about the new API changes and came here to talk about left politics, share material and have fun. I have a lot of experience with digital preservation, cats are my favorite animals and I am allergic to liberalism.

I didn’t realize that Lemmygrad had a new flood of users. That’s pretty sweet!

I’m sorta new, and my account is a few months old. I loved GenZedong on Reddit and got really pissed off when it was removed for being too based. I also saw a few posts that reeked of liberalism and it pissed me off so much, I deleted all social media for good. However, I wanted to continue to consume more leftist content, so I found Lemmygrad from a GZD archive. All in all, I have been lurking for less than a year, and barely making posts and comments this past few months.

People are flooding in because reddit is going to start charging exorbitant prices to use its API, effectively killing 3rd party client apps.

You have a few gems like Cowboy Bebop and plenty of good films and shows, but I feel like the vast majority is literally just “OMG LITTLE GIRL MEGA BOOBA MAGIC EXPLOSION FANSERVICE”

Not really, especially in recent years. Probably partially thanks to China, but the fan service stuff is getting increasingly rare. There is still some, but it is mostly tolerable.

Vast majority of recent anime, anyway. There are still lots of gems made in the past. Some well-known, but most remain an unknown niche. (This also happens when most anime is made these days without much fanservice - either they become niche or ‘too boring’ for some people)

Guess that explains why 99% of the anime I watch are all niche media, lmao.

I have noticed the ridiculous amount of libs while poking around other instances. Lemmygrad is a shining beacon of hope. When I first discovered Lemmy and the Fediverse, my first thought was I had to find a Marxist instance to call home. Hopefully most comrades go through the same thought process when making the switch.

Similar situation with Mastodon. Once you find an instance that’s quick to ban the garbage, it’s a great time, but until that point it can be a bit frustrating.

is there an ML mastodon instance? I wasn’t able to find one, so I settled down on .social and just manually filtered out lib hashtags (annoying).

Don’t just go to the main instance and find other groups and communities on there so you can customize your feed and following.

Mastodon is great, but it takes awhile; it’s also far less toxic than Twitter.

Fortunately, if there’s an instance of insufferable liberals lemmygrad could always defederate from them. Assuming they haven’t already defederated from lemmygrad.

Lemmy becoming more widely adopted shouldn’t necessarily mean lemmygrad will have to spend a bunch of time fending off libs.

Sure, my Youtube is here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCa6sZIs9w57R78AAnIaKNNw

I would make videos for any- and every-one who wants to watch, on or for any leftist platform. I don’t have much of a following, barely any subs on Youtube and the 3k+ followers I had on each of my tiktok accounts doesn’t extend outside of the app at all.

        • @CriticalResist8OPA

We had 385k views on a video for TikTok, but after that our reach got severely reduced, probably because we didn’t post enough or didn’t post in the right format. You can see our profile here: https://www.tiktok.com/@prolewiki

TikTok is a very insular platform, they barely leave it because it has everything they want on it. What we found from our usage of TikTok is that on 385k views, you had maybe 10 of them check out the website. Compared to Twitter where on 100k views, we can get 100-200 people checking out the website on threads (with a call to action).

There’s probably something we can work out, I’ll have to think about it and get back to you if that sounds good.

          • @millennialchaos
            link

Yep, same here, I’ve got several videos in the hundreds of thousands of views, but that doesn’t translate to anything off platform. Tiktok is relatively easy to grow on but unless you get a massive following it will stay almost completely self-contained. It’s not conducive to the in-depth content I like to make, since videos over 3 minutes long don’t get any views.

I’m about to start making a series of videos doing in-depth debunks of the most common DPRK myths, like Otto Warmbier, the ‘3 generations of punishment’, etc.

There’s probably something we can work out, I’ll have to think about it and get back to you if that sounds good.

            Sure, let me know.

Brigades by anti-communists. Mostly, and specifically, PraxBen’s community. You can’t post anything even remotely polarizing on Tiktok. It happens to pretty much all leftist creators of any size, like Midwestern Marx or even Hasanabi.

It’s not worth the effort to try to make non-combative content, so I gave up.

Hi everyone, late to this thread. I’ve joined in order to interact more in ML spaces and hopefully sharpen my usage of theory in daily life. This place served an integral role in radicalizing me and I’m thankful for that.

Well, at the moment I’m trying to apply Dialectical Materialism in my daily life, so works such as Stalin’s Dialectical and Historical materialism have been useful. Anarchism or Socialism has been also a pleasant read, I think it helps clear up the willing misinterpretations of Marxism anarchists do.

Though regarding conciseness, I like Mao’s “Combat Liberalism”. Currently I’m reading Lenin and then I plan to read more Marx, perhaps economics.

      2411 months ago

For some reason I was under the impression I could make a post to my own profile, whoops! I’ll do my intro here!

Hi, I’m suggs. I’m a college student at a large public university, and I’ve been involved in a few leftist groups here at my university, but I’m still trying to find one that is actually Marxist. I’d like to share my story of how I was radicalized.

I should also preface this by stating my father is a small business owner, so I have been extremely privileged in my petty bourgeoise upbringing. Despite my mother being a minority in my country, I am cis and white passing, and I recognize the privilege that comes with that.

In high school I fell deep into the alt-right pipeline online, and I crawled through the dankest, most disturbing chan boards as I consumed redpill after redpill. In college, I took Arabic language courses because I thought it would be fun to learn a difficult language. I ended up falling in love with the language and eventually traveled to Jordan in a study abroad program to further my study of the language. On this trip, my reactionary views clashed with my classmates, and I was ostracized throughout the entire trip. I’d experienced moments like this in the past, but this trip is what truly started my reflection on my worldview.

Over the next few years as I struggled in an identity crisis, I fell into a deep depression. After a few years of blowing in the wind and dropping out of college, I reconnected with my cousin. My cousin introduced me to Marxist ideas, and as someone involved in local politics in our city, he introduced me to our local communist party. From there, I consumed literature he recommended, and I branched out and continued studying on my own. I’ve since radicalized many of my family members and most of my friends, and I continue to share what I’ve learned and encourage others to consume literature.

I can’t wait to learn more with the community here. See you all around.

Thanks for sharing your story, I’ve seen this similar trend many times, reactionary people who, once they actually interact with people outside their own societal strata, begin to question their beliefs. I’ve had many friends who were racist, alt-right reactionaries who changed their views once they started to interact with those they supposedly “hated”.

Unfortunately my Arabic has decayed significantly due to my years outside of the classroom, but recently I’ve been doing some of my own studying online in preparation for returning to Arabic class.

A few months back, I went to a small Mediterranean restaurant nearby and chatted with the owner in Arabic. He recommended I come see him at his mosque where he teaches children Arabic, he said he’d love to have me there for classes. I’ve been putting it off, but maybe I should give his number a ring soon.

There is a piece of software called PeerTube which does federated video sharing along the lines of YouTube, but I can’t name an explicitly ML instance off the top of my head. Naturally, hosting a video sharing website like PeerTube is going to be much more resource intensive than a largely text-based message board. It is almost certainly something which would need to be supported by donations.

I’m trying to create an algorithm that generates racing lines for randomly generated race tracks. I once tried to make a racing game and had no idea how to make the AI follow a nice path around the track, so I came up with the idea of a project that generates said path. What I’m doing, basically, is assuming the fastest path around a corner is the biggest radius semi circle and trying to spawn these circles in every corner, than I connect them with straight lines
