Discussion questions:

What new books are you reading?

Do you prefer fiction or non-fiction?

Question of the week:

Be honest: do you get your books from Amazon or directly from the publishers? If you do a bit of both, how often for each?

Enjoy!

(I do this so people here can talk about things other than politics so enjoy yourselves.)

Fiction: I just finished Ferfume, interesting book, too French, left me feeling a little empty; I started V for Vendetta, which I wasn’t too into, but I’m sure it’ll get better. Non-fiction: I just finished Red Star Over the Third-World, which was pretty good; I’m a few chapters into the audiobook of the Shock Doctrine, and I started Anti-Duhring.

I recently finished reading the first 20 volumes of My Hero Academia, and I gotta say that I’ve fallen in love with the manga. I’m hoping to get the remaining volumes.

Not yet, but I definitely will after I catch up on the manga. I’m looking forward to watching the anime.

You should read the Berserk manga sometime.

The (3D) anime sucks though; the 2D one is supposed to be good, but it’s from the 1990s.

I read much, much more non-fiction but I suppose I like it and fiction about the same. I’m obviously passionate about politics and the material, but I can burn myself out on theory and have sent myself spiraling before going down certain rabbit holes. I can get passionate about fiction, but it always feels so less urgent than theory, so there’s usually a twinge of silly guilt within me when I start getting passionate about a work of fictional literature.

I buy from Amazon more often than not, and I just got a Kindle. Sucks, but it is what it is. If PSL or Peace, Land and Bread drop a new book I’ll try to buy it straight from them to support the comrades.

Reading sporadically “Berserk” manga, “Revolt of the Angels” by Anatole France and “Wretched of the Earth” by Fanon. I don’t know what I expected out of Fanon, something that felt more academic and unengaged maybe, but his passion and fire are absolutely infectious. His words on the meaning of violence and the horrific dehumanization a la colonialism are as poignant as ever. Something I’m sick of is publishing houses adding forewords to Fanon’s works written by “leftist”, white intellectuals examining the writing as if it were written by an object to be admired or scorned rather than a revolutionary, brilliant man. Sorry, I don’t give a flying fuck what Zizek or Sartre think of this work and their qualms with it. What they would have changed, what they agree with. Smh, why the fuck should anyone care?

    Sorry. Little heated lol.

I would actually read fiction here and there to help alleviate the atmosphere and seriousness of the topics that you broach and learn about.

It helps and makes everything much more smoother.

It’s a good form of self-help and, I would argue, quite necessary.

Been ill for the past several week, plus there were holidays, so I got kind of lazy with the reading. Thought to switch to some fiction (i.e. my Warhammer backlog), but haven’t gotten to that either. Feelsbadman

Currently reading There Is No Antimemetics Division which is a sort of a horror sci-fi story with Lovecraftian vibes to it. Reminds me a bit of The Laundry Files. And taking a bit of a break from non fiction, probably going to read [America and the China Threat: From The End of History to the End of Empire] next though. I’ve heard it’s a good overview of how global power is shifting towards China and the mechanics behind America’s decline.

I saw America and the China Threat: From The End of History to the End of Empire on Amazon and it seemed interesting.

I must say that There Is No Antimemetics Division seems interesting to me as well.

Still reading the same book as last time but I’ll answer the question. I’m going to be honest, since I got my e-reader I just pirate all my books and upload them to my e-reader. When I did buy physical books I tried buying them used from places like a abebooks, thriftbooks, etc. But I did buy some new books from Amazon just because they were cheaper than used ones.

Fiction: GRRM Dunk & Egg series

Non-Fiction: The Assassination of Fred Hampton

Gotta say I expected something different from this. More of a biography a la Malcolm X. Still interesting and just insane to what degree all levers of power worked to kill this 21 year old local leader. The whole state apparatus of the global hegemon was used to execute this young Chicago dude who barely got started with his work. And then you still have idiots 50 years later, whining about muh US democracy.

But the writing itself kinda irks me. It’s just so painfully…American. The author seems to have done some very good work in his life for the cause, but he talks and writes just like any other self-gratifying Yank high-achiever. It’s all about the self, how hard you work, how tough you are, but in such a self-important way. Dunno, really not my cup of tea at all. It’s a quick read though, so not too bad.

Nice, I considered re-reading/listening to ASOIAF for the third time since 2018, but got into D&E instead. How far in are you on your re-read and how do you like it this time around?

Oh also, obligatory fuck GRRM for being the slowest damn writer in history. 12 fuckin years my g
