Methinks the west should have their own “90s”, but under socialism, we have the issue of fixing the majority of problems.

As someone who wasn’t alive during the '90s, I guess it’s because, for Westerners, the main adversary (and thus threat of nuclear war that loomed during the Cold War) had been destroyed, and the 90s also preceded the rise of social media and internet, which are blamed for the propagation of societal ills nowadays. Couple all that with a strong pop culture and you have a recipe for nostalgia.

your average redditor? funny commercials. weird consumer goods like purple ketchup. “it was the golden age of cartoons”. they then may go onto extrapolate that consumer optimism onto political reality, and envision that it was simply a wonderful time to be alive.

Well that movie whitewashed the shit out of the 1950’s (and 80’s as well tbh). So it’s entirely possible to make such a movie now. Not to mention all the 80’s pseudonostalgia in media/Hollywood - Stranger Things, Ready Player One, etc

Tbf 1980s were good for movies: Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, Aliens, A Nightmare on Elm Street series, Friday the 13th, Predator, E.T., Ghostbusters, The Shinning, Indiana Jones, Terminator, Scarface, The Thing, og Robocop etc.

Unlike all today’s bullshit which takes place in 1980s.

I work with a lot of Albanians/Bosnians/Kosovans etc. and one of my Belgian coworkers hosted a 90s party a while ago. The Yugoslav coworkers started joking about dressing up in military gear to honor their 90s.
