      As someone who wasn’t alive during the '90s, I guess it’s because, for Westerners, the main adversary (and thus threat of nuclear war that loomed during the Cold War) had been destroyed, and the 90s also preceded the rise of social media and internet, which are blamed for the propagation of societal ills nowadays. Couple all that with a strong pop culture and you have a recipe for nostalgia.

      your average redditor? funny commercials. weird consumer goods like purple ketchup. “it was the golden age of cartoons”. they then may go onto extrapolate that consumer optimism onto political reality, and envision that it was simply a wonderful time to be alive.
