As the lemmygrad community was heavily in agreement of merging our many (~10) “Shit X Say” communities into one, we are moving forward with that.

But here I’m proposing the last call to make your voice heard before we start deleting stuff.

Our proposition is to have 2 communities :

  • Keep ShitLiberalsSay for all things from reactionaries and non-communists, because it’s a big and active community
  • Create a new ShitUltrasSay community for all things from “leftists”, e.g. MLMs, anarchists, trots, patsocs, ultras, leftcoms…

The merger will look like this (again still a proposition):

  • In a first step, a grace period of several days is allowed so that you can save content from all the deleted communities. We’ll also announce which communities will be merged where.
  • In a second step, we will delete the superfluous communities. This means all their content and comments will be deleted from the front end, but still accessible via direct link.
  • In a third step, we have to assign the new ShitUltrasSay community (not yet created) to someone. I’m not entirely sure about how to solve that yet. If all the current mods of Shit X Say community want to pitch in and decide between themselves if they want to mod together or something.
  • After that, we will clarify in the main sidebar that everything should be posted in those two communities and we will delete all new communities that bear the Shit X Say label that can fit into one of the two existing communities.

All inputs welcome of course.

Communities that would be merged and my proposal:

Shit Reactionaries Say (ex Shit Liberals Say)

    Shit Ultras Say

This would make the new Shit Reactionaries Say community quite a catch-all however, and we could balance the teams by putting for example patsocs and the vaush community in the new shit ultras say community.

I’m placing arethestraightsok on hold for now, we can always merge it later. I see lots of upvotes but I wish people would comment so that we had a clear idea of how the community feels about all these plans!

I think a lot of our queer folk are on hiatus rn, but I think keeping queer content in its own space lets us keep better tabs on it so the straights don’t make it weird or try to gaslight us about it. It also gives a clear space for us to talk about our stuff on our terms.

I am pinging the mods of the various communities we would be merging for their last objections and approval. If you see this message in your inbox please check it out.

First of all, shitliberalssay mods @AgreeableLandscape@lemmygrad.ml, @Karlovious@lemmygrad.ml and @AnarchoBolshevik@lemmygrad.ml : is it alright with you if we merge most of these Shit X Say community into your community? I’m thinking you might want to name more mods down the line too.

Secondly, I’m pinging the mods of the communities we would be deleting to be merged into one of the two above this comment.

      @ComradeClucky@lemmygrad.ml, @tomaw@lemmygrad.ml @TheKanzler@lemmygrad.ml, @absentthereaper@lemmygrad.ml, @leninenjoyer@lemmygrad.ml @JoeDaRedTrooperYT@lemmygrad.ml @B0rodin@lemmygrad.ml @Aru@lemmygrad.ml @itselectricboi@lemmygrad.ml

Do you agree with the merger plan outlined in the comment above?

Edit: we are planning deletion because people can still comment even when set to “mod-only”. They just can’t post. But if you really want to keep one of your community/ies we can work something out.

So if you still have the right links, you can still see the content, even after a community is deleted, correct?

If so, I’ve saved all the post links for Shit Lemmy.ml Says, and it can be safely deleted.

I agree with the merging of all my “Shit X Says” communities to the SRS community.

All aforementioned communitites will be notified abt this asap, all will be set to read only until archived.

I have no objections if it means the community listing gets cleaned up; better to have a one stop shop than dozens of li’l pieces.

        • Holy crap sorry for not replying! I’m on a Lemmy client that doesn’t show user mentions very well. Yes you can and I assume you already have, I have been following the discussion and I think it’s a good idea.

No worries, we’re moving forward with the merger and for now will ostensibly merge everything into SLS and the new SUS.

You might want to name more mods on SLS as well as clarifying which type of content is allowed in SLS. Additionally, make the community NSFW – some people in the original thread where the policy was requested noted that they didn’t necessarily want to see this type of content.

We might make a new Shit Reactionaries Say community to replace SLS, not sure yet.

Can I make a rule you cant comment? I think some of the posts were informative, so i’d rather keep them up.

If the community is deleted the posts are still available as long as you have the direct link, they just can’t be searched or seen on the frontpage.

Alternatively you can also lock every single submission, which blocks all comments (but not votes iirc), but I’m worried if we let the communities up people might still try and make their own.

As mentioned before I am okay with it!

Edit: we are planning deletion because people can still comment even when set to “mod-only”. They just can’t post. But if you really want to keep one of your community/ies we can work something out.

A point worth noting is that deleting a community hides the posts, they are still accessible with the direct link or if the community is ever undeleted. Assuming you mean just the remove button. If you issue a backend command and actually delete from the database then obviously they’re permanently deleted.

Personally, I recommend just shelving the communities until Lemmy has a proper archive community option, that way the posts can be brought back as readonly later since a lot of good discussions went on in those threads that would be a shame to permanently lose.

Ultimately we are going to move everything to !shitreactionariessay@lemmygrad.ml and !shitultrassay@lemmygrad.ml, and will want SLS to be turned mod-only… this is what most of the admin team wants and most users seem to lean this way too.

SLS Will not be deleted because there’s 1.5k posts, as for the other communities, most of them have very few posts (like just 3 or 5) so there wouldn’t be much loss. Most community owners have already backed up their URLs in the way you mentioned (just clicked the remove button), we actually went from like 12 communities to just 4 already haha.

I think we can’t delete communities from the backend because it could break federation.

Glad you agreed so readily, I was of the opinion we could keep SLS but yeah, it would probably get confusing for new users to have the URL say SLS but the name say SRS
