The CPC was the working class. They didn’t retreat to the countryside or decide to fight a guerilla war for shits and giggles because they were unpopular in the cities or something. They were violently purged en masse (as in, hundreds of thousands of leftist workers and communist party members were murdered in cold blood) by the order of the KMT and had to flee. The KMT had taken a fascistic anti-proletarian position and needed to be overthrown. As with the Soviets overthrowing the Nazis, the only people you can reliably count on to defeat fascist movements are communists, and the CPC was thankfully victorious, apparently in spite of their “autocratic culture.”
