This will be applied strictly equally and nothing at all like when reddit banned chapo and genzedong.

Hope it becomes a barren wasteland where normies dare not to tread (akin to Parler or Gab) and the only people active there are far-right shitheads circlejerking one another anyway.

Use a nitter instance to view tweets without an account (until Musk musks the Twitter API…)

From what I understand nitter uses Twitter’s “Unofficial API”. It’s similar to Invidious where they reverse engineered enough to make an alternate frontend. This means that whenever Twitter makes big changes to their internal protocols and APIs, then nitter will be broken until the devs get to work and fix what’s broken.

Actually, not really. Surprising, I know, but it’s still mostly normies looking to follow celebrities. Besides Instagram, Twitter is one of the only social media platforms that celebrities flock to. Facebook doesn’t have that kind of environment. We’ll see how far he lets things go until advertisers start leaving. They’re not leftist but usually advertisers promoting whatever don’t want to be associated with slurs.

We ought to be rejoicing about this new demagoguery. He’s reportedly already clamped down on left wing criticism against his own person, including claims from several people that they’ve been shadow banned for dredging up his old posts about the coup in Bolivia. This means more and more left leaning people will be pushed out from twitter, meaning they’ll have to come to dedicated platforms that actually foster their views like Lemmygrad instead.

Honestly? Yeah, I think I’m okay with twitter’s downfall. I follow some cool people on there but hopefully they’ll move somewhere else.

I’m super pessimistic that anyone worthwhile will actually start using the fediverse / mastodon. It makes sense for lemmy, because its topic focused discussion, or a messaging app, where all you care about is secure comms.

But twitter / mastodon is all about building a personal brand, a following, clout, etc. That means people won’t leave unless their followers come with them.

The few that do will bring at least a portion of their followers though. Do you reckon that’s a good thing or is it not enough?

It’d def be a good thing, but I haven’t seen a single bigger communist account move to mastodon over this.

Yeah that’s fair. Perhaps some will come with time, but maybe not. Its early days yet.

Probably because the ban waves haven’t really started. Elon has owned the company for mere days. The collapse of twitter will take many months or years.

It’s still early so everyone seems to be sitting tight for now. Do any big leftist accounts even know about Lemmygrad or mastodon / fediverse?

Not that I know of, but ur right that ppl should be letting these accounts know of the fediverse.

Mr. Musk, what has inspired you to take this groundbreaking position?

It’s the same policy as Twitter had before, but before half of the users were bots (most of these extreme right wing). It is these that Musk wants to eliminate.
