It’s pure fearmongering, US cannot quit NATO because it’s a pillar of US imperialism. The only purpose is to blackmail EU governments to pour more money and to deepthroat the boot farther.

Realistically though, what would change in practical terms if US quit NATO. Europe made itself entirely dependent on US at this point, and they’re terrified of Russia. So, they’re still going to be buying weapons from US, and they’re still going to be economically subjugated by US because they don’t have other options. Seems like leaving NATO would just give US more flexibility to focus on Asia while making Europe more desperate which keeps it firmly under US control.

I could see it both ways. Short-term, Europe would continue to be dependent on the U.S., but how long until you have some EU-style military pact?

I can certainly see EU going full fascist. The two main problems EU has are lack of energy and lack of industry. There aren’t any simple solutions to these problems either, and the industry problem can’t even begin to be tackled before the energy problem is solved. I expect that for the foreseeable future EU is going to be forced to rely on US for protection.

What we might see though is countries exiting the EU in favor of joining BRICS. Hungary and Slovakia seem like possible candidates here. Doing that would restore their access to Russian energy and Chinese manufacturing, and that will likely provide a much better economic stimulus than anything EU can offer.

Imagine the US pushing Europe into war with Russia and then at the last second is like nah, you got this, keep buying our overpriced hardware and you’ll be fine.

The Blob would have Trump JFKed before they’d allow it.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the blob is on board with this given that Vicky just got dumped. Ukraine is going to end in disaster for NATO, and US sees China as the main rival.

So, it makes sense to pivot to Asia and leave Europe holding the bag with Russia. Military industry will still be selling weapons to Europe, but US will no longer have any actual commitments.

EU already put itself in a position where they’re entirely dependent on US militarily and economically with or without NATO.

Do they really think Trump would quit NATO? I get that even if there is a 5% chance of it actually happening, they might see it as good to prepare. IDK if a Trump presidency would be good for the world. I imagine he’d continue the farce in Ukraine and also protect corporations from accountability like any other bourgeoisie president would do. He’ll also persecute trans people and ethnic minorities to distract from the deteriorating conditions of capitalism

I get the impression that Trump faction is isolationist. So, while it will absolutely be terrible for people living in US, it might weaken the hegemony further.

They’d sooner axe an isolationist president, than do anything that’d harm their global hegemony, like dismantling NATO.

I don’t see that US leaving NATO would actually harm their hegemony. It might even strengthen it because US will no longer have direct obligations to Europe, that means Europe will be forced to beg US for help in case of a crisis as opposed to take it for granted.

But they also wouldn’t be bound by any decisions NATO makes, and given that they comprise the bulk of the military might of NATO, it’s going to be a toothless alliance without them. So, at the end of the day, Europe would have to come begging US for protection.

Things have not gotten that progressive under Biden either. Many liberals are acting like delusional fasicsts warmongering against “Orc” Russians. This new Nakba is escalating under Biden. Biden and the useless democrats have refused to secure abortion rights for women. The fascist border policy under Obama has continued to escalate and is creating migrant slave child workers. At this point I see no difference. Their rhetoric means nothing if they do the same thing.

I don’t see Trump as the main factor there. It’s the declining material conditions coupled with the the failure of the left that’s strengthening the far right. Fascism is capitalism in crisis after all.

Rock and hard place. The dwindling benefits of the imperialism of NATO vs continuing to not come up with a new fairer mode of economics.

The problem with being an imperialist leech is that the global south runs out of blood, and sometimes they acquire salt.

idk if quitting a place where you have veto powers would be a good idea if other countries still have those powers
