I plan to watch Lightyear, but I’m all out of ideas on what else to watch.
I’m looking for another drama or TV show, but we’ll see about that as well.
Discussion questions:
-
What are your favorite shows?
-
What are you currently watching?
My answers?
None.
And nothing.
Anyway, feel free to discuss whatever, I suppose; try to answer the questions as well. Thanks!
Also, shameless plug-in for a Discord server that me, BayArea415, and some good friends created:
Enjoy!
I just finished The Sopranos and it was amazing. I honestly didn’t even wanna watch the last season bc I didn’t want it to end. I just watched Gattaca. It was awesome. Also Everything, Everywhere, All at Once was very good.
Oh nice. I’ll keep an eye on those ones.

Great topic!
I’ve not long finished the Lincoln Lawyer (the series). I saw the movie with Matthew Mcconaughey years ago and remember enjoying it. Wasn’t sure about the new series as I thought it might ruin my memory of the movie.
15 minutes in, I was thinking, ‘this is rubbish, I’ll turn it off’. As I’m standing up to close Netflix, the story picks up. Glad I watched the whole season in the end. It’s bourgeois af. But the characters and storyline are engaging enough. I’ll be watching the next season if one comes out.
Not sure if I have favourites. Not since reading Parenti’s Make Believe Media. After reading that book, I couldn’t enjoy most entertainment media for a few years. But I’ve come to accept that I can still enjoy movies and series if I park my politics. Afterwards, I can dissect whatever I have watched and get a secondary pleasure from a political critique.
In fact, it’s quite amusing to be able to spot/ predict where any given story is going depending on whether the audience has yet been introduced to a villain from e.g. Russia or China.
It’s also handy to know what people are watching. Given my preference for non fiction and apathy for sports and bourgeois politics / news, keeping up with series and movies gives me something to talk about (except for Marvel; there aren’t many Marvel movies I can stomach). If that means putting up with the weird world of on-screen political economy, so be it.
As for shows I would recommend, in no particular order, and excluding too many series that I’ve forgotten:
- Dash and Lily
- Lillehammer
- Norsemen
- Breaking Bad
- Doctor Who (seasons starting with Christopher Eccleston)
- Swedish Dicks
Who’s your favourite Doctor?
That’s a hard question!
Every time there’s a new doctor, I don’t know if I can keep watching because I loved the previous one so much.
That said, possibly Matt Smith.
But I only watched one season with Peter Capoldi, then stopped watching (work got in the way and I never found the time to go back to it, but I might turn it back on soon).
How about you?
And another question: who’s your favourite companion?
As far as rebooted Doctor goes? I’d still say Eccleston. He had this fleur of otherness. That said, I enjoyed the Tennant/Tate combo, because Donna played off the Doctor quite well, even if it took me time to come to appreciate the dynamic.
Can’t argue with that.
Does that mean you’re more a fan of the original series?
Somewhat, as pretentious as they sounds. The old and new Whos are a bit different beasts, honestly. Both had some weird plotlines over the years. And really, without the new Who I wouldn’t have even known about the old one, so there’s that.
Not pretentious, really.
I’ll add the old ones to my list.
My top 5 are:
- Breaking Bad
- Game of Thrones
- The Mandalorian
- Primeval
- Danganronpa(anime)
Ooph one of these must be divisive, with the down vote!
Is the Mandalorian set in the Star Wars universe?
And do you include the ending when you say GoT? (I’ve not seen the series, but I read the books and I saw some memes and criticism about the series ending – don’t give away too many spoilers, please.)
Yes, The Mandalorian is Star Wars, with Baby Yoda.
And no, GoT season 8 is not included…
Norsemen? Don’t you mean Vikings?
Also, thank God, you didn’t mention Game of Thrones.
The original Norwegian title is Vikingane (The Vikings).
But the English release is called Norsemen.
Most of the cast was also in Lilyhammer.
The writers / directors are Jon Iver Helgaker and Jonas Torgersen.
Huh. Weird.
Have you seen it?
Can’t say I have.
It’s worth watching.
It seems to actively reject capitalist (liberal) realism.
I have wondered if any other Marxists who have seen the show have noticed this.

It’s hard to match the perfection that Black Sails is. I still jam to the opening track to this day.
Ah! Black Sails is great! I’m thinking of watching the next Star Trek live-action show myself.
Damn, I remember when Black Sails was airing; I watched it every week. I wouldn’t mind it getting a sequel, but that’s what I said about Spartacus…
Been re-watching the Matrix movies. Resurrections gets better with each viewing :)
The latest one?
Yes.
