In Canada teeth are luxury bones. I just spent 1200$ on Monday to get an infected tooth fixed. My job is dealing with biohazardous waste for 30k a year. Honestly a noose might be preferable.

That’s what makes this assisted dying thing so evil - basic health care and social services are being left to rot but you can die if you want.

Right before I left Canada a dentist was incredibly eager about trying to sell me a wisdom tooth removal. It was an upscale practice and yet their sales tactics and energy gave me car dealership vibes. In Germany getting it out wasn’t an issue, can’t even tell you how much it cost. My normal dentist has done some things that weren’t technically on the insurance approved list either, but they bill it so that insurance covers it anyway.

A wisdom tooth removal is 900$ atm. My dentist is trying to set me up for one but I’m putting it off. Things are fucking ridiculous. I work either slightly more or slightly less than full time hours depending on how my schedule works out each week. But no insurance/benefits of course. Tired of hearing other Canadians jerk off over “free” Healthcare and “Frontline heroes” while getting Ass blasted by our shitty neolib regime.

Yeah, unfortunately teeth and eyes (maybe ears too) are not covered in our healthcare system, so you either pay out of pocket or get private insurance to cover all or part of it…. It’s incredibly stupid

iirc, in our last election 95-97% of Canadians supported expanding healthcare to dental and optical across all parties, even most Conservatives supported improving our healthcare system, but we’re a capitalist democracy so… predictable things happened.

Yeah I remember something like that. The NDP had their dental care plan that I believe is in the process of being implemented

Looks like it just started today. https://www.ctvnews.ca/health/a-national-dental-care-benefit-is-now-law-here-s-who-is-eligible-1.6157800 Seems to be very watered down, with a lot of caveats. So a far cry from real universal coverage. But at least it’s something I suppose.

Same in Poland. Basic dentistry is free, but there was dentist exodus from the Poland lately and lines are long. And if you need dentist surgeon, you’re absolutely screwed.

The only legitimate reason I could see to down vote is because Muad used a meme with the political compass colors, and the political compass is brain rot.

I am unfortunately completely unaware of the situation with healthcare in Canada, only heard yanks meme about how the leafs have it (unlike Yankee sell-your-kidney system). So does Canada have universal healthcare or what?

It depends on what you mean by “universal.” It’s a two-tier system (not technically, but in effect), meaning there are a lot of things that are only covered privately. On top of that, pharmacare is not covered (meaning that if you get diagnosed you still have to pay for the treatment somehow). Many specialists: not covered. Dental and eye? Not covered.

Are you a migrant? Well canada has medical deportation. Are you homeless? You need a permanent address to get medicare. Are you disabled? Tough shit, disability benefits are below the ability to live, are rarely granted, and do not cover extended care most of the time. Do you live in one of the less populated provinces? No abortion access. No emergency rooms. No doctors. I’ve been on the wait list to get a GP for seven years. Only two emergency rooms in the entire province have 24/7 hours. Most of the province does not have pediatrics. Most of the province does not have emergency care. The bits that do, it is only open office hours. Get hurt after 4 pm? Tough shit. Hurt on the weekends? Tough shit. Actually get hurt in the right time frame and then wait for four hours in the emergency room, and now it’s closed? Well, go drive two hours to a different one. That one you wait another four hours and it’s closed now too? Well drive back to where you started.

Get sick out of province? Well hope you enjoy ambulance bills. Even worse if the ambulance bill gets billed at the same time as something that medicare should cover. The hospital will refuse to re-bill it separately, and then your province will refuse to reimburse you for the bill entirely, and suddenly you owe medical debt you’ll never pay off (like me).

Edit to add: if you’re trans, Black or Indigenous, good fucking luck. Doctors don’t care, won’t see you, won’t treat you.
