A friend told me this was rooted in classism. Basically they used to use spices, but when their exploitation flooded the market with cheap spices it became available to the lower class, and that turned the perception into a bad thing.

I gotta agree with you there. France is a country who had, as a pastime less than 200 years ago, putting a bunch of cats into a sack and burning them alive.. Despicable people.
The French ate mummies like many other Europeans. Yet they still accused indigenous people (and “orientals”) of cannibalism. It’s an incredibly disturbing topic to read.
