I think China’s indifference to LGBT+ issues gets misconstrued in the West, because indifference here means people get hurt. China literally has Trans healthcare. Yeah, they don’t have same sex marriage but that doesn’t seem to be a big issue, at least it’s not something they’re thinking about solving right now. I do not know what their laws on discrimination are, if there is any, but regardless the idea that China is a conservative paradise is very weird. Just because they’re friends with Russia doesn’t mean they feel the same way about LGBT+ people. It’s like you said, they are not interested in the culture war, and rightly so. Apparently China is doing LGBTQ+ rights in a different way by silently integrating it into society as opposed to grandiose gestures. I’m not necessarily sure if that is the best way but it is in line with the PRC’s ideals of “harmony”.
