I recall reading somewhere that Pinochet and the Chicago boys actually wrecked the economy and the nationalized copper mines were one of the few things keeping the economy afloat.

Yeah the “saved the economy” is ignoring the general decrease in inequality under Allende. It’s just a dogwhistle for western companies made money exploiting the people

The second half of that whole spiel is just typical liberal talking points about the wonders of the free market. Its remarkable how easily such arguments click into apologia for fascism.

This callous disregard for human life is the natural conclusion of where such liberal logic will lead you; the primacy of market forces over everything else will eventually be upheld at the expense of everything else, from self determination and democracy to human life itself; everything is secondary and disposable compared to the sanctity of markets.

Libs that defend Pinochet use this argument unironically.

And yet when presented by the fact that Mao grew China’s economy so hard the population literally doubled in less than 20 years they dismiss it as “an accident of history”

Didn’t it not work, and to stay in power Pinochet had to to reverse a bunch of the economic liberalization he’d done?
