Please ask me anything you want about firearms. I work as a firearms engineer, and would be happy to answer questions, I also invite other people to answer questions.

I don’t have technical questions, but what about political or opinion ones? Should comrades carry or leave it at home (in other words, is being armed routinely or just in the time of need more important)? By time of need, I’m referring to an organized call to action, not an unexpected danger (like a mugging).

I have a couple other questions that would be better suited for Element. ;)

In my opinion, it’s always a good idea to have an arm nearby. And I regularly advise comrades to keep a rifle and some magazines somewhere protected in their vehicle. You might never need to pull over and grab the rifle, but it’s a great idea to have it just in case. It’s also never a bad idea to get your CCL.

What’s the cheapest kind of gun that isn’t complete garbage?

If looking for a cheap gun is it better to get something new or check out pawn shops and the like?

Are those make-your-own gun kits you can order online worth it? Especially if you aren’t with experienced in such hardware?

Also, my favorite looking gun is those cool Mauser pistols with the thin barrel and I saw some at a local pawn shop, so I’m wondering if they are dependable/fun to shoot.

      • What’s the cheapest kind of gun that isn’t complete garbage?

prices can vary heavily place to place, but generally, foreign milsurp rifles from before the 1950s are the cheapest guns that can be found. In some places, you can get a Mosin Nagant for right around $100. Unlike what certain memers like to believe, no gun is “complete garbage”. If a gun sucks, it just needs more work.

      • If looking for a cheap gun is it better to get something new or check out pawnshops and the like?

Depends on what you’re in the market for. There’s a few companies that specialize in selling cheap-but-modern guns, such as Keltec. But, pawnshops generally sell at affordable prices. Though, a majority of the guns I’ve picked up from pawnshops needed to be taken into the shop to fix some problems. So, just understand you get what you pay for.

      • Are those make-your-own gun kits you can order online worth it? Especially if you aren’t with experienced in such hardware?

Homebuilding is only worthwhile if you have the tools. But, if you have the tools, there’s walkthroughs for most kits, and generally making guns is straight forwards once you have the technical data. I recommend doing a homebuild at least once in your life, but I understand not everyone gets the privilege of having a shop full of tools and the time to dedicate to such a thing.

      • Also, my favorite looking gun is those cool Mauser pistols with the thin barrel and I saw some at a local pawn shop, so I’m wondering if they are dependable/fun to shoot.

The question should never be “well, is it reliable”, and rather should always be “well, can I afford it”. Broken guns can be fixed or sold, and it’s more than possible to have a fun shooting day on a gun that doesn’t always load properly.

I don’t know for a fact but in pop culture (TV shows and movies) there’s a meme that they backfire often because of poor build and people end up losing their hands.

I have heard of this, it’s also not a new concept at all. It’s essentially just a break-action shotgun pistol, that’s been around since regular break actions have been. Most consumers would also know them more with flare pistols, it’s the exact same concept.

From the images I’ve been able to find on the ones from India though, they seem to lack proper seal between the chamber and the breech-plate, and seem to lack heat treating to ensure strength. Fixing that is simple though, just an extra 1-5 hours of work. These could also be made really pretty, with more time.

idk if this was asked in the last AMA, but what are some good firearms to get started with as someone who’s never shot one before?

Honestly any gun you can get your hands on. Though, many will say shooting a .22lr rifle is the way to start and I’d be inclined to agree with that. I learned on an AR-7, and like many people who started shooting young, I think if I started with something bigger I wouldn’t have enjoyed it as much.

Ruger 10/22s can be found relatively cheaply and serve as really good starter guns. You can also easily outfit them with aftermarket parts and make them a mainstay in your collection after you expand. You could also get a Cricket, bolt actions can teach new shooters a lot about proper shooting form and the importance of hitting the target without wasting much ammunition. Also, if in the future you end up teaching new shooters, having a bolt action helps a lot with safety. It’s a lot easier to tell if a bolt action is safe, than a closed-bolt automatic.

Generally speaking, new shooters - especially ones who are scared of it - will enjoy the smaller calibres at first. So, it’s arguably better to find one that doesn’t seem scary to you while you’re learning to get used to it.

    -5.56 or 7.62x39 and why ?

-What is the best alternative to firearms ?

-Are there equipment or ‘‘mods’’ that are really useful on guns and not just dumb useless deco stuff

-Vintage wooden gun look or modern polymer look ?

    -Favorite AK

-What do you think is better ? Simple but rough gun or Complex but smooth gun.

-What is the difference between single action and double action on pistols?

      • 5.56 or 7.62x39 and why?

Comparing the rounds back-to-back is a pointless exercise. Both will kill you equally as well, though they have different ballistics they’re not that different overall.

      • What is the best alternative to firearms?

Either air rifles, or crossbows. Depending on what the argument is.

      • Are there equipment or ‘‘mods’’ that are really useful on guns and not just dumb useless deco stuff

most attachments are genuinely useful, hence they haven’t been pushed out of the market. Also, you could make an argument that even the most pointless modifications are in some way useful.

      • Vintage wooden gun look or modern polymer look?

For me, wood and steel. I’m not a fan of plastic, but there are a few guns that look good regardless.

      • Favorite AK

I’m digging the AK-12 lately, Though I’ll never turn my back on the classic AK-47 Type II.

      • What do you think is better ? Simple but rough gun or Complex but smooth gun.

purely depends on the material conditions of the hypothetical. Are we fighting a war, or just collecting? If we’re collecting then we have the time to fully machine the firearms and make them beautiful. If we’re fighting a war, then we only have time for rough machining. Neither is better, neither is worse.

      • What is the difference between single action and double action on pistols?

Single Action: pull the hammer for every shot.

Double Action: pulling the trigger also primes the hammer, allowing for repeated shots.

I generally hate using this term for non-human objects, but the AK-12 prototype was fucking SEXY. I loved the interesting lines and the unique design language, it made the engineer in me squeal. But, the final version of it loses pretty much everything that makes it interesting and attractive, which is a massive bummer.

What is the best gun to have at home for protection and why?

It’s a subjective answer, ultimately you need to assess the conditions of your neighbourhood and the layout of your home and pick a firearm that would be suited to that. If you live in an apartment complex, you have a high risk of collateral damage with most arms. If you live out in the country you might need to shoot at longer distance and have less risk of hitting an innocent. So, to borrow a metaphor, read the tea leaves.

In my opinion, a decent pump shotgun is what most homeowners/renters should have in their home for defence. But you could defend your home with anything, and it’s really up to you at the end of the day.

Is there a repository or something like that to check gun laws of different places internationally?

I’m not sure if there’s a repository, but if the country in question has their laws in a language you speak, you can generally just look them up.

All of my learning was from trade schools, all courses specifically for gunsmithing. I’m an “engineer” because I design far more than I do actual work, and work for me generally entails spending hours upon hours designing to given specifications, being told my design isn’t good enough, trying again, being told to make a prototype. rinse, repeat.

What’s your favorite job / work you do on rifles? Not something that’s easy necessarily, just something that’s satisfying.

Honestly, most of the work pings every ASMR receptor in my body. But, anything that needs to be filed is a good fuckin time for me, as well as actual assembling is a good feeling. So, to give a definitive answer, final fit-up my favourite thing to do.

The work goes from a bunch of parts that don’t perfectly fit together, to a fully assembled and ready-to-rock firearm in only a few moments. Such a fuckin vibe.
