In seriousness, they’re all doing their best considering the condition of the world. I wish Cuba didn’t have to center tourism for its economy and Vietnam didn’t have to liberalize, but that’s what it’s come to, and they will return to glory eventually.

It’s shows the sorry state of the world, but you might be on to something there. The CPC is Marxist and it’s strategy and tactics are on point even if we don’t understand every decision and even if they make mistakes. Just imagine the kind of internal debates that can be had among 80+ million communists, unfettered by any need whatsoever to appease liberals. That’s a lot of brain power.
I don’t like the arms sales, either (not just to SA, although that is a particularly egregious example). If it wasn’t China, would it have just been someone else? And now China is in a position to broker peace. Much to the chagrin of the US bourgeoisie.
In the long term, SA can be promised a key role in land routes between China and Africa. SA is in a pivotal location for that. Imagine high speed rail from Asia to Africa. We can dream of a prosperous future for a region that the west repeatedly bombed.
Tbh, I’m trying to make sense of it, here, but it doesn’t feel right suggesting that Yemen was a necessary sacrifice for all this – because that’s what it means to suggest that selling arms to SA was worth it. That can’t be right.
Another perspective may be that by selling arms to SA and building trust and relationships in the Middle East, China will be able to end the war in Yemen sooner than it would have otherwise ended. And if China can unite SA and Iran, we may be looking at the growth of the material support network needed to see a free Palestine, too.
I have plenty of principled critiques.
I hate that China promotes chinese traditional “medicine” and homeopathy on the same level as modern medical science.
I do think that not all traditional medicine is bad, and I know that certain parts of traditional medicine have some genuine value and are able to help people, and this isn’t me trying to be chauvinist whatsoever. And I understand China wanting to promote its culture after the Century of Humiliation and decades of Western demonization and sanctions and threats, but to say that TCM is anywhere near the same level as medicine is ridiculous and has the potential to hurt people or make them forego actual treatment in favor of woo.
I also hate that China still has bile bears, and I consider that to be animal abuse, even if the bear bile has some uses, and I hope that eventually China can produce it synthetically.
Similarly to China, I don’t like that Cuba allows cock fighting.
And lastly for now, I think that China is a little too happy to arrest anyone who is even slightly critical.
I understand that running a country of over 1.4 billion people requires some sacrifices, and I think that compared to western imperialist countries, China is pretty good about not arresting people will-nilly and knowing what battles to pick, so to speak. And I also think that people vastly underestimate the power and reach of western NGO’s and subversive and terrorist elements in China.
That being said, I think that China should slightly cool off on arresting supposed dissidents. Surveillance is fine, though. Maybe they have information and perspective that a western Latino like me doesn’t have, and I could very well be wrong, and its very easy for me to sit here and criticize this. But I feel that this gives more power and martyrs those who don’t deserve it, and makes China look bad on the world stage, which could contribute to racism and imperialism.

I disagree on the dissidents point though. The example of GDR has taught us how easily capitalists can sway people if they feel their life is getting austere. Such people can be convinced by a number that looks and feels large but won’t make a dent to bourgeois coffers, to abandon their home or even to betray it actively. As such I don’t see a point in criticism unless we see evidence they’re making a mistake.

After Germany was split, the west quickly realised they could harm the eastern part by causing a brain drain. Educated people and specialists were invited with monetary incentives and there were campaigns to inform them of the opportunities that awaited them in the west. Now, convincing da russian or georgian to uproot their and perhaps their family’s entire life to move to the US or western Europe is a hard sell, but the cretins in FRG were merely suggesting they essentially move neighbourhoods, quite literally in the case of Berlin.
There is a grain of truth in the horseshit they say about the Berlin wall and the Stasi, and it’s that they didn’t want folks to leave willy nilly. The worker’s state couldn’t educate people for years, only to lose half of them to dreams of shoe emporiums and shit.
Anyway, I hope the long winded explanation helps convey what I mean. The west, having the advantage of having that sort of money, has always used economic incentive to pull people to their side, literally and figuratively. The western incentive isn’t limited to such direct means as what they provided to the student leaders at the 4th June incident. A small group would be directly bought, a larger group would be “informed” of “opportunities”, and a much larger group would be fooled by the former two. I’m not saying that’s all the dissidents, but I’d be shocked if it didn’t make up a significant number, even a majority.
IIRC life in the DDR was quite austere because they had to pay war reparations for Nazi crimes. The BRD got help from the US to pay- (yes in a very self serving fashion from the US side but still), whereas the DDR obviously didn’t get any help. It’s an interesting layer of context in the greater picture of post-war development and the tale of two Germanies.
Then again it’s not like life suddenly got better after the annexation. Reunification and Treuhand were unmitigated disasters for the east, and it’s noticeably behind even a generation later.
