I bought a safety razor a couple months ago and I’ve been using some blades that came with it, I don’t even think they have a brand, it looks like it’s just some Chinese manufactured stuff without name and they are okay, but I think I could get something a little bit better. Has any of you tried the Feather brand? I think they’re Japanese or somethign.
Back when I did shave I looked up the company that supplies the dollar shave club with all their various razors and then bought directly from that company for an even cheaper deal. Idk if they sell safety razors though but I got a bulk pack of razors and haven’t bought them in… Like a decade or more now. Course I have also embraced the beard at this point and haven’t touched my face with a razon in years. Barely even trim anymore. My goal is to be able to roleplay as Marx for Halloween. Lol.
My goal is to be able to roleplay as Marx for Halloween
Let me rephrase that.
My goal is to be able to roleplay as Marx BY Halloween.
Feather are great. I currently am using Astra blades that I got cheap in bulk off of Amazon. They’re definitely not as nice as Feather blades, but these things are so cheap that I only use them once and then toss them so it’s not a huge difference.
I’ve heard Feathers are “too sharp”, but I’m unsure how that could be a bad thing as long as you are careful.
Yeah, I feel I should be doing that with these I have right now but since I only had 5 I tried to make them last since I don’t know if they sell razor blades in my city so I might have to buy them online and it takes a bit to arrive.
The ones I’m currently using are called Dorco. I think I got them as a gift, not sure. They are pretty good. I rarely cut myself and they seem to be able to last quite a while.
I just grab the next best mid-tier ones I can find and usually they turn out to be okay for 2 - 3 uses. I don’t really care about the brand. Never go with the cheapest ones though. The difference is in the metal alloy. Cheaper blades have less steel/more chromium which makes them more soft. And a soft blade gets dull pretty quick. I once had ones that started going dull during the first use. So midway through the shave I had to press harder and go over multiple times to cut the hair. I always ended up having a bloody neck with them lol.
I tried feather but they were too agressive for me. I cut myself a lot with them. I mostly use gilette 7’o clock because that’s what the nearby shops usually have and I don’t wanna buy online.
Derby Blue and Dorco are both just fine and you should be able to get a lot for cheap. If you pop the blade out and rinse and dry it you can definitely get three or four shaves out of one blade.
It’s been a while since I last used a safety razor, but I believe my favorites were Astra’s.
I’d recommend buying a variety pack of blades if you have the ability to, and just trying different blades out yourself.
Voskhod blades are my favorite, but Astra SP blades work for just about anyone.
Honestly I got a Phillips (electric) “multigroom” line razor a few years back and I’m super happy with it. This thing resists to water and has lasted me I think almost 10 years now. I never have to charge it either for some reason, I guess moving a tiny motor doesn’t consume a lot of energy.
It has like 5-6 different heads you can switch because it’s meant to be used on the whole body, you even have something for your nose hair lol. Personally I just use the multipurpose head (looks like a hair clipper), and you have plastic guards you can add to cut your beard to a certain wanted level.
The thing with those super fancy electric razors like the Phillips with the three rotative heads (that everyone else does now too) is they don’t work, especially if you have long beard lol. They only work on super short beard, i.e. for daily use.
Hair clipper is the way to go, but most are not waterproof. The multigroom series is and is the only one that has lasted me more than a few years.
The purchase price is steep but you don’t have to fiddle with razor blades anymore and it pays for itself since there’s no maintenance costs to it.
Even the waterproof ones, you should clean out the heads and re-oil somewhat regularly, and you can use mineral oil when you run out of the tiny bottle of oil these machines usually ship with. It drains the batteries a lot less when it’s well lubricated too. I’ve had one for also about 10 years, uses double A’s, but I change them maybe once every two years.
I like Feather and are the only ones I use (because I got a batch really cheap which will last me until i die). They require you to be light on the wrist though, but I never cut myself.

I’m also using Astra SP blades, they work great for me. Not the nicest shave I’ve ever had but for the price they are fantastic.
Whatever you get, be aware that it’ll take a few shaves for your skin to adjust to a new blade. Those first few shaves will probably suck, it isn’t necessarily indicative of the blade.
