I know all communists should be a member of their relevant union; however, no one in my workplace is unionised (and I am on a short contract anyway).
Being a union member benefits the entire working class — such as by pushing for labour laws that benefit even non-union members, and by bringing workers into the class struggle — hence I want to contribute to this, rather than just freeload on it. However, it does cost $50 per month so I want to ask you comrades if you think it’s worthwhile before I spend my money.
no one is the union
50$ per month
🤔
Math… It never was my strong suit
Who would you be paying $50 to if no one at your workplace is in a union?
It’s not as simple as ‘in a union = good, not in a union = bad’. If you’re thinking about joining a larger group within your industry that doesn’t have any presence in your specific workplace, it might be better to talk to your colleagues about it first. Talk to that union you’re thinking of joining and ask for help, because establishing a union presence in your workplace is extremely delicate for very obvious reasons and they should have people who specialise in doing that kind of organising; it’s what you’d eventually be paying $50/mo for.
And good on you for being willing to do it!
Thank you comrade, that’s a good idea. I’ll email the union to ask if they can help me.
Typically, unions don’t really have much sway unless most employees are in it. If you try to unionize on your own you’ll probably just get fired.
I wouldn’t tell my boss I was in the union. I would only tell coworkers if I trusted them.
I…don’t think that’s unions work but ok
Depends on what your union does, I guess. My union offers me free legal support if needed, helps me to look for new job opportunities if I want to and also financially compensates me in certain situations. Mine is not as expensive though so it’s a bit easier to join. But all these things are worth it for me. You never think you need a union until you need one, I always say.
That being said, maybe talk to some of your coworkers first. Some might also want to join.
Thank you for sharing comrade. I always read your posts on this site – they are very informative.
