I ended my time with Reddit after reporting a clearly openly anti-Semitic post. Got a response back that just said “We have concluded that this post has broken none of Reddit’s guidelines”. A complete joke of a moderation system.

Most social media is selling you something currently. What’s more, we’ve seen multiple times with Youtube where it’s potentially suppressed minority creators or treated them unfairly (first one that comes to mind is how literally no black leftist creators were being promoted by the algorithm - just white creators. It only changed after some black creators were promoted by already popular creators.) (second was the recent flag that popped up for a let’s player showing something in Mortuary’s Assistant that no one else got flagged for).

So yeah, still pipelining and recruitment centers for hate groups, still harbors are unsavory shit, still surviving off the fact that people post funny crap and cat photos to keep a userbase.

Youtube is full of edgy Nazis spewing out fashwave crap and pornbots spewing out bait leading to nudes but turns out to be virus laden crap. Also full off mid white girls being generic thots.

How can social media be both a borderline brothel and a cesspool of literal Neo-Nazi propaganda at the same time?

Don’t forget the bot comment chains under every popular and semi-popular video about how “With Mr. Bob’s help I was able to get back my losses!!!11”. You know those that usually lead to some form of crypto scam.

“The Social Dilemma”, while being unbridled from legitimacy or seriousness via a dumbass “both sides bad” fictional story underneath the actual documentary, is a worthwhile watch if you can continue to think critically while it shows you the dumbass B plot. Social media, at least in the West, currently functions mostly as a right-wing radicalizer, a violent political polarizer, an advertising pit, an addiction in and of itself, a gateway to porn and other insidious habits, sites for scams, sites for stalking… I could go on and on. I think in its current form, it’s poisoning the minds of billions. I like to foresee a future where we have a healthy social media, but I honestly have very little idea what that would look like.

Might be old news by now but the Rohingya massacre would not have been successful as it was/is without Facebook. Anti-Muslim forces used it to propagate violently islamophobic propaganda, and made it mandatory to have Facebook installed on your phone.

Re: The Social Dilemma’s both-sidesism, it’s so cringe. The boy in the story gets radicalized by a group of people whose big violent thing is… “Don’t Vote!” What horrible extremists! The filmmakers had a veritable smorgasbord of right-wing terrorist attacks only made possible through social media dissemination to choose from, and they came up with the most libshit, centrist ass take they could. Jokers.

I remember it having major radical centrist vibes too. But you’re right it did do a good job of platforming insiders of these tech companies, telling us how insidious they are, and the psychological harm they’re doing.

As someone who recently had the task of launching the party on tiktok platform, I’ve been incredibly surprised. There is an incredible leftist space on tiktok if you find it, of course comment moderation is exhausting but there’s also plenty of opportunities for education.

Reddit is at least tolerable because I just go there to bullshit and see what’s happening in my area. With apps like snapchat, ig (which I don’t use much of to begin with), there’s just such a weird feeling when I use it for too long. Feels like I’m not really interacting with that person, but rather some figment of them instead. A figment that I at times attach envy, jealousy, etc. onto.

Whenever I try to keep up with what people are doing in their lives, I just think about how I have to head into work the next day 😣. I’m watching highlights of someone’s life, but obviously, dum dum brain isn’t that logical and doesn’t realize that. Then again, it’s designed to make you make you wanna stay on and compete with others.

It has redeeming qualities, definitely, but like with anything else capitalism is ruining it.
