There isn’t even such thing as “the spetznaz”. It’s just a generic term in Russian - there’s police спецназ, army спецназ, спецназ GRU. It’s just another case of “spooky foreign word”.

Also still waiting for these dummies to learn OsNaz also exist

As Shrike said, it’s a generic Russian word for special forces, e.g. American TV show S.W.A.T. was aired in Russia under the name Spetsnaz.

It’s an abbreviation of “spetsialnogo naznacheniya” which means “special purpose”, kinda like the English word SpecOps for special operations, but the meaning is closer to the English word “commandoes”.

According to accounts by Kristin Enmark, one of the hostages, the police were acting incompetently, with little care for the hostages’ safety. This forced the hostages to negotiate for their lives and releases with the robbers on their own. In the process, the hostages saw the robbers behaving more rationally than the police negotiators and subsequently developed a deep distrust towards the latter. Enmark had criticized Bejerot specifically for endangering their lives by behaving aggressively and agitating the captors. She had criticized the police for pointing guns at the convicts while the hostages were in the line of fire, and she had told news outlets that one of the captors tried to protect the hostages from being caught in the crossfire. She was also critical of prime minister Olof Palme, as she had negotiated with the captors for freedom, but the prime minister told her that she would have to content herself with dying at her post rather than Palme giving in to the captors’ demands. Ultimately, Enmark explained she was more afraid of the police, whose attitude seemed to be a much larger, direct threat to her life than the robbers.

Nils Bejerot, a Swedish criminologist and psychiatrist, invented the term [Stockholm Syndrome] after the Stockholm police asked him for assistance with analyzing the victims’ reactions to the 1973 bank robbery and their status as hostages.

They are probably trying to mention the Dubrovka theatre which isn’t the ownage they think it is since the perpetrators were US supported.

So? How do the Chechens being supplied and armed by the US justify the needless deaths of 132 hostages through one of the stupidest plans imaginable?

    Eh, this one is reasonable.

Belsan and Dubrovka were humiliating disasters. “Mmm yes, let’s fill a packed theater with fentanyl gas and kill 132 hostages through asphyxiation and choking to death on their own tongues.”

“Our multiple day siege of the school has failed and the Chechens are becoming violent and delirious because of the meth they’re on and dehydration; over 150 children and their parents are already dead due to heatstroke, dehydration, and being shot? Let’s storm the school with tanks, BMPs and RPGs killing hundreds more!” Even though the terrorists had agreed to accept an official negotiation party and relief supplies scheduled just a handful of hours after the disastrous assault was launched. No need to wait for that and see if it brings any results!”

Do try to read a bit more about Dubrovka at least. The terrorists there had multiple bombs and not only have refused negotiations - they gunned down the police officer who went to negotiate and offered to take place of the hostage

They didn’t want to die, the suicide vests were insurance. They never intended to actually detonate any of the bombs. They would never release hundreds of hostages if they wanted a high death toll.

The lot of other bombs in building weren’t enough of insurance?

              Yes?

If you’re going to commit an act of terror like this, do you think they would have half assed it?

Again. Why would they let hundreds of hostages go, accept negotiation parties, and wait 4 days if all they intended to do was suicide bomb themselves? Why would the first thing they ask for be negotiators, and when those negotiators are sent, why would they hold true to their end of the deal and release several hostages?

You also think that a terrorist is going to think logically? Of course they’re going to rig the place. Or did you expect them to leave the windows open and the doors unlocked too?

I have no idea where you got any of this information. I really recommend you read more about the crisis, almost nothing you said was true.

What? What police officer? The only person attempting to “negotiate” and was shot was a deranged civilian woman who the terrorists thought was an FSB agent and illegally crossed the police line by herself.

They had accepted several negotiation parties over the course of the four days and expressed multiple times that they didn’t want to kill the hostages, they didn’t want to fight the FSB and GRU and that they were scared. They also immediately released hundreds of people who needed medical attention, were pregnant, were children, or were foreign without any demands and without prompting. They let the audience make phone calls and speak with loved ones, pray, use a designated bathroom area, speak with the news, and walk around the theater.

Where did you read that they refused negotiations? Their first demand was to speak to a Duma member, FSB officer, and Red Cross representatives as a negotiation party, for which they were willing to release hostages. The party arrived, negotiations were held, and the agreed hostages were released. There were negotiations on every day of the siege.

        https://www.smh.com.au/world/chechen-rebels-release-some-hostages-20021024-gdfr7x.html

Russian authorities held talks with the hostage takers. The hostage-takers demanded to talk with Iosif Kobzon, a parliament member and singer who has performed songs lauding Chechnya, and with International Red Cross representatives. Four people, including a man waving some white fabric like a flag, entered the building about 1:20pm Shortly thereafter, a man in his 60s, appearing feeble and distraught left the theatre. The Interfax news agency identified him as a British citizen, but did not provide details. A woman and three children, believed to be Russians, were let out a few minutes later.

as previously mentioned they also said that if government representatives were sent to negotiate that they would release more hostages. Which they did, multiple times*.

They would have absolutely surrendered if the negotiations continued. There was absolutely no need to launch a moronic raid that killed 132 people when the terrorists had only killed 3 people. Great return on investment right?

Do you really think the extraordinarily stupid plan was necessary? The terrorists were armed with gas masks, all the gas did was blind them while killing the audience members.
