They didn’t want to die, the suicide vests were insurance. They never intended to actually detonate any of the bombs. They would never release hundreds of hostages if they wanted a high death toll.

They let the audience make phone calls and speak with loved ones, pray, use a designated bathroom area, speak with the news, and walk around the theater.
