The next Reddit controversy is scheduled for a few months time, so around then I would think.
I doubt word of mouth and organic growth will be enough to reach that point. So unless some planned promotions are made, never.
As an end user, the backend feels great (no clunky errors like Reddit or Ruqqus), but the UI has issues. I think if the goal is more (active) users, UI improvements are the lowest hanging fruits to get there.
imo the UI feels much cleaner than the new reddit UI and much more modern that the old reddit UI. I would like to be see some kind of compact mode though, especially for mobile.
I’m def up for seeing ideas / ways I could tweak the layout to make it more clean and compact. I’m not really a UI person, outside of just copying the styles of my favorite apps… like this UI is modeled mostly after boost for reddit.
I mainly use redreader for Reddit, I don’t think I have ever used boost. I like it and find it easy/simple to use.

I have never thought about this, but now that you mention it, I could see a compact mode being a nice addition. Yeah, I think you are right. I have no problems whatsoever with the current mode, but there is a lot of free space around that could be potentially shrunken for a pretty compact UI.

Yeah for sure the UI needs some improvements. The moderation actions are really awkward (they are weirdly positioned text, and the reason boxes are not well aligned either; also you can’t uncollapse them), on mobile the icons search, notifications and all that are vertically distributed instead of horizontally, comments are not marked as read when replied to, the search bar sometimes doesn’t expand properly, when searching remote stuff I almost always have to go forwards and backwards a page for it to show up, on mobile the community’s sidebar shows between post content and the sorting options, etc
Now that I think of it, I really should open issues for all this hehe

Lemmy will reach 100k users when 80k community or 8 communities with 10k users will move to lemmy from other platforms. r/communism101 or r/selfhosted are good candidates. The best way lemmy could reach sufficient audience is to acquire community by community. To do that in my eyes better to contact to admins, communities representatives or some clubs instead of posting about lemmy on reddit or mastodon
Upd probably better to start with smaller but active communities like /r/jackrussellterrier or ham radio :)
We’d def appreciate any help we could get w/ ppl reaching out to communities and seeing if they’d like to move here or set up their own lemmy instance. @nutomic@lemmy.ml and I aren’t that great at spreading lemmy around to other communities, we’d like to just code and work on the site.
yeah sure this should be definitely a collective work! If any lemmy user could reach out his/her favourite community’s admin from any competing platform with smooth proposal to try to organise a “second space” at lemmy for their users who value foss, we could get some traction :)
Around 12 years in the case of lemmy.ml if everything keeps the same pace (if 20 users register each day).
Linear fit will not be accurate … maybe logarithmic fit would be better ? Also : there will be a crisis someday at Reddit and there is no mathematical fit for that !
I know. I gave a result based on the assumption that users register at a constant rate just for the fun of it, which is obviously inaccurate, because that rate changes according to external factors.
I also used total users not active users in a month and of lemmy.ml not lemmy in general. That line, on the small scale of less than a year does look linear, but obviously in the grand scheme of things isn’t.
Dang, I had no idea this place had that many accounts. It doesn’t seem that active compared to fedi sites of a similar size.
Yeah, total accts isn’t really that meaningful, this is why I made active users / month the default sort for the communities page. Active meaning a person has made a comment or post.
Looking at some account profiles it seems a lot of people registered a test account about a year ago when Lemmy was first announced (before it was even fully federated) and them mostly abandoned their accounts.
Maybe time to clean up the database and delete all accounts that have not logged in for a year?
Nah, don’t do that. I have an OG account but only came back when Ruqqus went full dumpster.
small communities connected with fediverse are better than huge single community imo.
when it gets large, more server resource is needed, admins need to pay more money. Ads may be introduced because no one really donates. And all the toxicity.

I moved here from Reddit as that platform has changed for the worst in the last few years. I bet I’m not the only one looking for something else. Lemmy is quite unknown though, I just happened to stumble upon it.
