It’s all about balance: don’t give up too early, but it’s also a waste of time to beat a dead horse. Balance is what I miss in most of such phrases.
I once ended up in the middle of riots between Tibetans and the Chinese army. Had to walk 30km through the Himalaya to Nepal over slippery slopes. I was too scared to rest, as I worried I might not dare to go on once I sat down. Then getting threatened with knives in the back of a Brazilian bus wasn’t very nice either. Some Malaysian guy saved my neck back then, making some karate moves and walking out with me in his tracks. Outside he told me he just bluffed and didn’t know anything about karate. I almost peed myself…
