So I wanted to start a little bit of discussion on something I’ve somehow never noticed until quite recently. Namely: how much of western comedy requires the cast to be irredeemable assholes (which is presented as quirky and cool). The obvious example would be something like “It’s always sunny”, but there’s much more. Red Dwarf, Futurama, others I’m forgetting. Do you think this has a detrimental effect on the viewers?

I simply cant watch Its Always Sunny in Philadelphia for this reason. It just stresses me out. I tried to watch it because its so beloved but I just cant. I have zero appreciation for it.

Im not sure what effect it has on people tho.

Nah, and it’s always “edgy” (racist or some other stupid thing).

      I hate it.

Just rewatched “Doctor Zhivago” for the umpteenth time. The wife loves the tragic love story while the cinematography still blows me away. No matter what critics say and its historical inaccuracy, it’s still my favorite David Lean movie.

      Isn’t it anti-Soviet?

I mean, I’m not judging, but I’ve honestly never watched it.

I’m curious on my part, if mildly.

It blows for historical accuracy but the suffering of people at war comes through well. If you want to feel what cold feels like then this is the show.

Rewatched ‘The Last Samurai’ it’s still great. Gotta love a film recognizing “America bad”, production values and score are incredible. And younger but dilfy, bearded Tom Cruise is 🔥.
