Yeah the smothering with advertisements is absolutely ridiculous. I actually never liked adverts but couldn’t articulate why. Much later (but before the turn to tankie town) I read this blog post which I agreed with mostly. This along with using uBlock Origin on the browser and not consuming stuff like movies, TV shows etc. now really makes me conscious of advertisements when I see them, even the covert ones. But most consumers are used to having a constant barrage of adverts being dumped on them. It blows my mind when I see my friends and family subject themselves to ads on YouTube and such. It takes some time to get out of that mentality.

Same, I haven’t had cable TV for like 10+ years, and every time I go to my friends or fam’s houses, the barrage of ads is so gross and I have such a visceral reaction to them that I almost need to leave the room. Meanwhile they’ve become totally inured to it.

Thx for that article, imma read that soon. If you haven’t I highly suggest reading Cialdini - The psychology of persuasion, there’s an audiobook for it on torrents. He’s a psych prof that went undercover for several years into various sales jobs, distilled nearly every sales tactic down to a few psychological tricks they use, and wrote a book on it. Once you learn them it becomes so transparent that every single ad you see, you be can easily tell which trick they’re using… rules 2 and 4, rule 1, etc.

Not the poster of that comment, but I’m surprised it happened on youtube of all places. That place is a fucking propaganda swamp. One left political video gets you 5 fucking fascist adjacents soon after in the recommends.

I’ve seen a video, probably by Markiplier or other pewdite youtuber, where he cleared cookies and went on YouTube, and from a random frontpage video he ended up at Holocaust denial in a few clicks.

This and the stadium name/event name sponsorships just to me seem really surreal and late-stage capitalist. Like, putting a logo of a fucking soft drink on a half-time show (USA)? Naming a stadium after a state energy company (Poland)?
