Chen Weihua liked Hakim’s tweet about getting him on the podcast on April 18 too:

The only reason I could see that is maybe it wouldn’t look good for Chen, a state official, to go onto a podcast that has dick jokes and stuff, which is unfortunate, Chen is quite funny

They had Prof. Richard Wolf on before, and that was probably the only episode where they all turned down their immature jokes and played it as a completely straight podcast, they can do it again I’m sure.

Chen is not a state official but a journalist at state owned news outlet China Daily.

I like the Deprogram but are there any funny communist podcast that aren’t so “bro-y”? It’s hard to radicalize female friends that have trouble reading when the only podcasts I can find are dominated by men.

Yeah thats a problem, they have a couple of good episodes with ladies like Izdihar and LunaOi but definitely its very “bro-y” like you said.

Well that kind of feels unavoidable seeing as how it’s run by three men having fun. I don’t see how’s that’s a problem with it especially as it’s “good fun” bro-y, and not “misogyny” bro-y. Though a womens marxist podcast would be a great idea.

There’s never been a piece of media with 100% audience relatability.

Being bro-y isn’t a problem if your intended audience is bros. It would just be nice to also have a funny communist podcast that is more accessible to women and queer people who are put off by bro humor.

Oh, I definitely agree with you, and I apologize if that came across as combative. I was trying to say that the angle that deprogram takes works for them, and trying to remold something existing would probably go poorly. But a queer or female podcast would be really nice! Can never have enough communist podcasts!

Though it guess it also is fair to mention that a large amount of the guests that are brought on are queer and/or female, and that the humor doesn’t really come across as bro-y or chauvinistic, but like 3 guys earnestly talking like friends.

Not to be “well I like it so that makes it ok” but I’d guess a lot of deprogram listeners (of which I am one) are not cishet straight guys - I’m a transfemme lesbian for example, and I’ve never felt like it wasn’t “for me” or I wasn’t invited or something.

I actually really enjoy the dynamic between the hosts, especially the (admittedly ironic) homoerotic flirting between Hakim and Yugopnik. They honestly give the ‘guys I would like to have a beer with’ vibe in most episodes.

Having said that, it’s also totally fair if someone is put off by their dynamic/interactions and yeah, nothing wrong with there being more commie media I guess. As long as it isn’t instead of organizing.

Yeah I’m generalizing a bit and obviously people irrespective of their identities can resonate with a variety of humors. I’m mainly talking about my own personal circle which has a lot of radlib feminists who are always on the cusp of a radicalizing breakthrough. But whenever we end up talking politics and I start giving my analysis of anything their complaints to me are always that Marxism is so “white dude heavy.” I always point out that there are plenty of feminist Marxists to learn from but they’re so resistant to studying any actual theory that at this point that I’ve just chalked it up to laziness/privilege/disinterest. But still, I’m always trying to nudge them in the direction of accessible ways to learn whenever it comes up.

All I’m saying is that The Deprogram would definitely not be their show and it would be nice to find an alternative which is just as entertaining and accessible.

There’s a podcast that was recommended to me by someone here called Red Menace. I just started listening to the first episode, but it’s not bro-y at all. The two cohosts go through popular communist texts from people like Lenin, Engels, Marx and explain it all. They go really in-depth too.

Only thing is the podcast doesn’t seem to be funny per-se. It’s kind of dense and serious (at least judging by the first episode)

Red Menace is great! I’ve learned a ton from them. Very heady though.

At least it’s funny, 90% of the lefty podcasts I listen to, I have to go back 30 seconds every few minutes because it’s tough to stay engaged. I love Multipolarista but that being said, it’s tough to listen to an hour of it straight. Chapo Traphouse and Deprogram have comedy mixed in, it’s a net-positive imo
