I definitely noticed how Pro-Cop and Pro-Elites his Batman movies were. He portrayed a people’s uprising as the worst possible thing and policeman as almost always noble.
I was a huge fan of Batman Begins and the Dark Knight, but the Dark Knight Rises leaves a very bad taste in my mouth. I haven’t watched any of the movies in like a decade-ish though, I don’t think.
In my mind, Batman is an archetypical anti-hero. He is a capitalist and definitely not a communist revolutionary, but I always view Batman as an Engels type character.
As a capitalist and in multiple incarnations, he’s usually portrayed as caring about his employees and paying them very well, he donates billions to charitable causes (This isn’t to say that donating money fixes societal problems, or that a society shouldn’t have to rely on donations from a billionaire with a conscience to barely put a band-aid on society’s problems, but I digress) that provide housing and decrease the costs of food and rent of Gotham by proxy, and he is just as likely to go after corrupt and criminal CEO’s and politicians and judges as he is to go after violent criminals, and he also provides funding to mental healthcare services and institutions and will often be against the death-penalty and he generally wants to help people more than beat the shit out of them.
Just like Spider-Man, I don’t think Batman should necessarily be pro-cop, since they are part of the capitalist system, and they treat him as a common criminal rather than a savior or at least a helper.
From what I remember of his Batman movies, they seem to follow the formula common in superhero stuff that goes something like: “communists, working class, colonized peoples, all don’t exist as organized groups, and when the poors get upset, they become unhinged sociopaths and have to be reigned in by someone who is rich and noble.” Not unlike the civil/savage mindset of colonialism.
Inception I remember liking for the trippy nature of it, but I’m not sure how I’d feel about it now. Been a long time since I watched it.

I fucking love the idea of there eventually being an ongoing solo series where Wang Baixi is the CEO of a tech-corporation akin to Huawei, Qualcomm, Tencent, YMTC. This is my personal concept:
By day, he is a tech-CEO and member of the Politburo. And by night, as the Chinese equivalent of Batman and secret agent of the CPC, he patrols the streets and rooftops looking for random violent crimes to stop, like sexual assault, muggings, smuggling, organized crime, violent drug dealers and pimps, and also looking for, hunting down and arresting foreign imperialist agents, rooting out traitors of the Chinese government, and taking down corrupt capitalists, CEO’s and corrupt CPC bosses that misuse their powers.
This too but even from a simplistic viewpoint if you disregard the politics, the fact that he dresses up as a bat for no good reason seems extremely stupid to me.

I think the vigilante angle you talk about falls apart a little bit if you consider that China is a pretty safe country. Both in terms of statistics and from anecdotes I have heard. But as you said he could take on organised crime and foreign actors though.
Yeah, China is a very safe country in the grand scheme of things, and is well on it’s way to almost eliminating crime in general, especially violent crime. But a government can’t be everywhere at once, even in best case scenarios. There’s always someone being hurt somewhere. And I imagine the random violent crimes would be something he finds occasionally, and the focus of his comic series would be about long-term buildup and conspiracy storylines.
He’s an excellent, top class cinematographer. Not a particularly amazing writer however.
He has good music taste i’ll give him that. I remember many scenes of his movies because Hans Zimmer did the music.

He’s hit or miss with characters. Plenty of emotion in Interstellar, for instance. In other movies they’re very much just there because the concept and plot requires them, though.
Interstellar was weird. I rewatched it recently, and it struck me just how every male character embodied the patriarchical ability to just not listen to anyone else and do whatever they wanted. Like, you’re all on a team, but also everyone is just unable to accept information from other people.
What pissed me off the most about interstellar is how they literally just took the ending of 2001 and copy pasted it in. It was one big MEMBA WATCHING AN ACTUAL COMPETENT DIRECTOR? haha!

Middle-brow Michael Bay. I like some of his movies alright, but he’s kinda annoying.
Used to like his movies a lot more, but my mind is changing on it as time goes by and as I start watching stuff from better directors.
A lot of people like Memento, but I honestly don’t think it’s great, it’s cool sure, but I just don’t get the hype, I think it could have been much better, by the time you are close to the end the mystery is not that enticing and the reveal felt flat to me. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind have a similar premise and it’s actually pretty good.
Interstellar I really like a lot, but I do dislike his incessant need to explain every single thing at all times, like to the point where it’s insulting to his audience. The planets the crew visits and Gargantua itself are cool as fuck tho. But I’m a sucker for anything space related, lol.
Inception is cool, but I thought it was gonna be better given how hyped up and popular it is, the effects are cool but has the same issues Interstellar has.
I don’t really remember much from Dunkirk but I do remember liking the cinematography there.
I loved Tenet on first watch, but the second time it lost a lot of it’s charm, it’s greatest strength is not knowing what the fuck is going on.

Oppenheimer I liked too, and I honestly think he wasn’t anticommunist in it, or at least not blatant about it, but it didn’t really touch on the stuff he should have, like the pov of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and it’s aftermath. There’s also his omission of the forced relocation of indigenous people from the place that became Los Alamos. These 2 things makes me feel like either there was heavy censoring there, or given his past record, just serves to show more clearly his right leaning agenda. I like that he actually criticizes the US government for once, but given what I just said, I’m don’t think I really care for much else coming from him.
In my opinion they seem artificial. Well crafted but lifeless.
I liked Memento but the rest of his work is basically forgettable to me. I saw all the Batman movies and I imagine if I gave a shit about Batman or cape shit in general I would have liked it but as it stands eh. Dunkirk put me to sleep and I haven’t seen Oppenheimer but I imagine it would put me to sleep even faster. Inception was kinda cool when I first saw it but when I really think about it’s not very interesting either. Interstellar had a few interesting bits but once again mostly just boring. The Prestige I could barely pay attention to and the twist I just didn’t care about. All in all most of his shit is just completely uninteresting to me.

After watching ‘Come and See’ it just shat all over Dunkirk for being a totally phoned in snoozefest, come and see is how you do a war film…

Out of curiosity, what are some movies you prefer or more specifically what are some movies that aren’t “boring” to you?
Hmmmm movies I do like. Terry Gilliams stuff is good (Brazil, 12 Monkeys, Time Bandits, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas). Some classic stuff like Double Indemnity, Some Like It Hot, The Great Escape, 12 Angry Men, lots of Hitchcock stuff like North by Northwest or Rear Window. Big fan of the old school Godzilla stuff as well. Comedies are great, anything Mel Brooks (Young Frankenstein, Blazing Saddles) or Leslie Nielsen (Airplane) or John Candy movies like Uncle Buck or Planes, Trains, and Automobiles. Some more modern rom coms like While You Were Sleeping or Much Ado About Nothing. A lot of Coen brothers stuff and Wes Anderson. Idk Christopher Nolans stuff just doesn’t have characters or drama that draws me in. It’s like big set pieces and super serious white dudes and idk it just doesn’t do anything for me. Memento was a good mystery and interesting concept and Interstellar is probably his next best movie but everything else is just like movies for people who use Letterboxd.
