I know someone who is obsessed with it and astrology and spent half an hour trying to explain me and my siblings that it’s legit while roasting our mess of a setup and home decorations(''having a painting of aggressive animals, horror decorations, figures, weapon replicas, pictures of our own late ancestors, too many stuff there and too many stuff here is not good actually etc) and that since we love China we should try it but yeah there is absolutely no way we’re moving anything lmao. We have and are used to this interior since 2014 and in no way we’re changing and we’re the kind of people where everything has to be in it’s place where we put it and no changing whatsoever but they can’t fathom that.

So what are your thoughts on it in general and what is CPC’s stance on it?

Superstition. Might be harmless as a hobby, but those things can run amok just as western astrology. CPC is against it at least officially, though idk in practice, most likely not strict enough, just as other kinds of superstition.

“Feng Shui” in the west, like most “exotic oriental mysticism” has no real connection to the initial ideas practiced in pre-modern Asian cultures beyond the same name.

It’s mainly used by Eat Pray Love types to pretend they are expert interior decorators (as you’ve seen with your acquaintance there). You get 3 different Feng Shui “experts” to look at a room and they’ll all recommend completely different (but equally expensive) “fixes” for the “problems” of the room. There’s no methodology and it’s 100% vibe based, regardless of how much they insist otherwise. It’s just yet another way con artists extract money from people who just want some control over their life.

I don’t know Feng Shui at all, but I enjoy watching Cliff Tan’s videos about it.

To me, it looks like it started as an art to optimise space and make it cosy, but being so ancient, some esoteric beliefs got attached to it over time to “explain” some of its principles.

Still, I think there are a lot of things that make sense with it, like placing your desk in a way where people won’t be walking in your back and look over your shoulder for example. It may be interesting to study it and try to apply the things that makes sense to you while disregarding all the “bad spirits” crap.

Feng Shui is nonsense, but I do appreciate its cultural contributions to architecture, whether it be the Forbidden City or HK skyline.

Personally, while I understand it’s superstition (and also am not generally inclined to such things in the first place) I do have some inherent fondness for the concept being ethnic Chinese, having always strongly identified with being so, and thus having a degree of inherent fondness for anything Chinese- even if I don’t know, and wouldn’t really bother to know the most about it (Feng Shui) specifically myself. It seems relatively harmless enough to me anyways.

painting of aggressive animals, horror decorations, figures, weapon replicas, pictures of our own late ancestors

Sounds very cozy. I wouldn’t change it just based on Feng Shui.

It’s not scientific, but can be an interesting way to make your hose feel more yours and to engage with your stuff in a more deliberate way and that can feel good, plus it has some practical concerns of how to.make your house less obstructed in some ways

I don’t think it’s real, but I think thinking about the “flow of energy” or whatever can help make spaces nice.

I think it’s kinda silly personally, if a friend organized their room that way I wouldn’t mind. I wouldn’t do it personally because I’m lazy and also I don’t think furniture has a correct place to go, it’s wherever you feel most comfortable with it
