In 1994, the Zapatista uprising deprivatized large swaths of Chiapas, putting the land back under Indigenous stewardship. For the past 26 years, Zapatista communities have been growing the infrastructure of self-governance, establishing worker coorperatives, and teaching children in their Maya langauges.

Another world is possible.

    My mom has done work with Just Coffee, a coop of coffee growers in Chiapas. She’s helped them through a Christian work group.

    But also she voted for Trump. Because letting people take control of their own labor is good when they’re poor people in the global south, but bad if they come to America.

      Are the Zapista regions just for indigenous people, or can anyone live there? I know it’s hugely focused on Indigenous rights, but searcing the English speaking internet I’ve never gotten a straight answer on whether it’s completely Indigenous ruled and inhabited, or if there are also white/general non-Indigenous people there and/or can participate in government.

        anybody can live, but it’s not like you can just show up with a backpack and expect them to trust you. It would be a long process. I know some people move to San Cristobal first and start with activism there.

        oh and it does depend if which Caracol you end up interacting with
