From what I’ve seen the new liberal government intends to be even more hardcore pro-NATO than their predecessors. Judging by their rhetoric some of them seem determined to do everything possible to accelerate toward an outright war with Russia.

At least the reactionaries were occasionally pretending to care about Polish national interests and not just about the West’s anti-Russia crusade, if for no other reason than to pander to petty bourgeois farmers upset about cheap Ukrainian grain imports.

In practice though i doubt there will be much difference in all but the messaging.

I am also afraid that the new government will lean towards conflict with Russia. On the other hand, the new government is seen as more pro-UE (“German agent”, as Kaczyński literally said about the new leader Tusk) than pro-US, and the previous government were literally US lapdogs, and I think, from the whole west, US are more interested in the conflict. I suppose, no drastically different politics will be seen.

Is there significant dissent towards the absurd level of militarization that Poland is proposing, or do the people agree? From the numbers I’m reading, it looks like Poland is looking to surpass rest of the EU combined in firepower. Are neighboring countries okay with it?

Zero dissent in Poland. Most of people don’t care at all, and rest do not believe this will come to pass since Poland military is a cold mess and our military expansion projects in last two decades were without exception a duds (though expensive). Like we build a corvette ship that took 19 years and ultimately became biggest and most underarmed patrol boat in the world. Or the mess with helicopters which is so convoluted even the ministry probably lost the plot themselves. Or the WSI affair when PiS govt destroyed military intelligence agency and most likely compromised what passes for national security here on every level. Or the Territorial Army which was supposed to be PiS private army and ended up with a formation completely unable to any actions which will probably be either dismantled or turned into army reserve since polish army as whole have drastic lack of manpower and zero reserves among population.

That’s all true. It is lucky that, while PiS is a kind of villain, it is also a bunch of incompetent amateurs, so damage made by them has some limits. One may call it the shit-Midas effect – everything they touch turns into shit, with some exceptions, like a very small reduction of inequalities by the 500+ program. Fortunately, as being said, the earlier governments were no better in militarization.

I didn’t consider the incompetence angle since I know little about the actual situation there. On paper, it looked like Poland was going to have a super army, a lot of debt, and little else. That’s a volatile mix but ineffective bureaucracy saves the day this time.

Hard to say what will be results, i can only be sure of two things:

              1. There will be huge money wastage (funnily enough the main argument of liberals during the PiS govt was stopping the inefficient social program 500+ because it was increasing debt, now they will put Poland in even more debt but instead of even inefficient social program we will get just money transfer to US and EU MIC)
              2. Poland will not have super army

I would said that the PiS and PO are exactly the same US lapdogs, PiS was just more open and crude about it. And being more pro-EU? Even if true, it’s just an extra step in being US lapdog, since in last two years EU as a whole way passed even the normal polish level of bootlicking US.

Yes. Up till now it was all posturing. PO being enthusiastically pro NATO/EU and PiS being theoretically sceptical of them - in practice the effect was absolutely exactly the same (that is, enthusiastic servilism towards US imperial interests) and the rhetoric was just rhetoric.

Isn’t that the case generally with the vassal states? In Germany it is the liberal Baerbock that is banging the drum of war the loudest (or so it seems from the media).

Well going from the previous experiences with succdems in power, they will do “compromises” all the time. With less embarassing episodes of public hitler particles detector emissions though.

Well, this is a real threat. As far as I know, mother of Barbara Nowacka published some appeal to do not let Roman Giertych be a ministry of education, but Barbara now is elected from the very same list as Giertych 😮‍💨
