He said something that at the time seemed strange and nonsensical to me: “When we say ‘compromise’, we mean that both parties roll back a little until the end result is acceptable. It’s not perfect, but it works. But when the west says ‘compromise’, they mean one party retracts all demands, and the other gets everything it wants. That’s the cause of our difficulties with the west.”
