I know some things work differently here on Lemmy, but is there a way to put a learning plan into the sidebar or something similar? Would we even want that?

Some people don’t understand how Lemmy works because of the Federation, which might make things confusing at first. I will make a post explaining how things work to the new people, and the mods can sticky it/add it to the sidebar if they want.

I think the only thing I didn’t get about this site was that you don’t start off subbed to many communities. On Hexbear you start off with a few subs by default so when I came on here I just assumed there weren’t many active users posting.

Yeah, I’m using the app, and I’m having difficulty looking for some way to browse communities. I thought I remembered there being more info available like a thing on where to go to learn theory or something, but I’m using the reddit app, and it won’t even let me in the sub to check.

On the navbar, there’s a button called “Communities”, there you can find a list of a lot of the existent communities.

What I’d recommend is for you to browse Lemmygrad using the “All” choice in the feed, that way you won’t lose anything and everything posted is communism basically so you won’t bee seeing much stuff you don’t like. If there’s something you don’t like, you can block communities/users.

Also if you want to search or browse communities you can do so in the navbar, the “Communities” section shows a list of communities ordered from biggest to smallest, and other stuff, and the magnifying glass can be used to search for specific users/posts/communities.

Do you mean like a wiki inside communities? The best way may be to use ProleWiki.
