Yes of course Ukraine is quite big and right now Kiev is far from the front lines, but it still seems odd to me that he appears to be so close to the action, and that other world leaders are meeting him there.

Simple - he’s pretty replacable. Even more, actually assassinating him would make him a martyr.
They probably won’t kill him off themselves though, since getting another one to such level of worship in the west would be hard.
