Anyone surprised that most people in Donetsk or luhansk would rather join Russia is utterly clueless. They do realize that this happening would shut down Azov and other terror groups in these areas? If I lived there I would 100% vote in favor just to finally escape the constant fear and terror of Azov goons lurking around every corner. Probably feels the same as being a Muslim in Iraq or Afghanistan during American occupation, where literal 4 year old children are permanently traumatized by the explosions, drones, etc.
Pro-tip: next time you see a lib babbling about the current Ukraine war, just casually ask them if they know Victoria Nuland went there in 2014 to personally support the Maidan coup.
I find it’s great to ask them what they think about NATO invasion of Yugoslavia where NATO recognized the independence of breakaway regions on the pretext of genocide, and then held referendums while these regions were occupied. It’s really fun to watch them explain that’s completely different from the approach Russia took in Ukraine.
