The drones are apparently rumored to be copied USian drones. The Iranians may have managed to reverse engineer the US drones. Not 100% but

Why? Russian military has its own drones. Certainly reconnaissance ones. Even drone tanks, something I’m pretty sure USA doesn’t have

At least according to one telegram account (asbmil), it’s more about how Iran has reverse-engineered the US’s tech so Russia can use these drones without fear of them getting captured/examined by the US (via Ukrainians)

This would be USA’s biggest nightmare to be real. Iran has hacked, captured and reverse engineered USA’s top drones & has shown numerous times that these drones flew freely over US ships and their carriers, filming them — undetected. Iran has profited off of USA’s trillion dollar research into drones and copied it tit for tat with improvements and great success. These drones are sophisticated and without a doubt some of the best in the world. Iran is a drone super power, they absolutely have the numbers the White House is claiming to give away. Whether that’s the truth or not, time will tell. But the story is plausible.

Russia does not sport as many drone classes as Iran and the Orion and other classes are way too valuable for Russia to risk them falling into Ukraine’s & USA’s hands. These Russian attack drones are being used in very safe ways. Aka — they’re not being used where they need to be used. With Iranian drones, Iran or Russia couldn’t care less as that’s literally USA’s reverse engineered tech.

To add a little more, Iran and Russia have technology transfer deals. Russia has given Iran a lot of military tech. So once again, this is plausible.

asbmil seems generally a little less bombastic than some of the other Russian reporting on the war (looking at you intelslavaZ) so… take that as you will.

From what I understand there’s an issue of control. An aerial drone is easier to keep in contact with the operator, whereas a ground drone could get blocked by walls. There’s also the matter of purpose - a UAV could be used for reconnaissance and for extrajudical assassination. A ground drone could be used for clearing up minefields (there’s one such version of Uran AFAIK). I don’t have information on how useful they are in combat, given the efficiency of modern anti-tank weapons.
