Some people do realize what an evil institution it is, a lot of them are pushed into the meat grinder from a very young age (entirely by design) and haven’t had a chance to shake their upbringing. There is a reason there is a fanatical hero worship of soldiers in the US. You also get the occasional people who actually step up to do the right thing like Hugh Thompson. Those are exceptionally few and far between though.

most american veteran-oriented media you see (such as the “veteran comedy” type shit you see on tiktok or youtube) constantly features jokes like this about doing war crimes. makes it pretty obvious that most veterans are probably not “remorseful” about what they did and that they see the horrific things they did abroad as just funny parts of the job rather than ruining the lives of poor people.
