Unfortunately, it is not yet an official holiday. But there is increasing support for it. Nonetheless, it is celebrated by black people all around the country and Suriname and the Antilles.
Any day of liberation’s a good day, regardless of how complete the liberation is afaic.
The slavery ended in 1873 btw. The colonies were not yet independent for another few decades and the Antilles are still part of The Netherlands to this day.
Antilles are still part of The Netherlands to this day.
How popular is an inpendence movement there.
Hey, good to see you again. I randomly thought about you in another thread the other day.
Anyway, I’m not aware of an independence movement on the islands. Curaçao and Saint Martin managed to become independent. Bonaire, Saint Eustatius and Saba are still ‘special municipalities’ within the Kingdom of The Netherlands. The relation these islands have with The Netherlands is still problematic and exploitatie to some degree, but AFAIK a serious independent movement is not yet active.
Random fun fact: The Netherlands, known for its flatness, does have a mountain peak at ±900m tall. This is because it is located on Saba.
Nice to see you again too.
