AAA games do not take risks in new mechanics or developing new genres, it’s always the indie developers that change the paradigm and create new genres.
Not only that but AAA games are incredibly inefficient, you have to unload a ridiculous amount of money on a video card just to be able to play a game? that’s fucking insane, i can run every indie game on steam with just an APU.
It takes a mega g*mer brain to see problems in a complex industry comprised of layers of developers, artists, writers, playtesters, publishers, advertisers, shareholders, etc. and reduce it to “graphics bad”.
Complex industry that is vertically directed by capitalists who only answer to safe returns on investment, especially since we are only talking about AAA. Dumping money into graphics really is a systemic problem that causes a lot of smaller issues.
Also, the Soviets desperately tried to get the US to agree to nuclear de-armament deals and we went “lol fuck no we will nuke you idiots into the ground if we think we can get away with it” This is an ok video but I dont think it really gets at the behind the scenes reasoning this is happening, Game studios are throwing a ton of money into graphics because that is the easiest and least risky thing to market. Studios dont want to take risks, and want to maximize profit, so that’s what’s leading to this focus on graphics, and also releasing incomplete games with tons of content that used to be released with the base game now locked as dlc
Another complaint: To my understanding the reason that physics engines have stalled is because that they are heavily CPU reliant and CPUs have a whole are not improving nearly as fast as in the past (death of Moore’s law and all that), where as GPUs haven’t faced quite the same level as slowdown until the last couple generations. CPUs might also be the problem with rendering thousands of enemies like he’s suggesting I’m not really sure. Someone more educated than me please tell me if I’m completely off base with this assessment

I remember reading about it when Ultimate Epic Battle Simulator 2 came out, developers were saying that it was specifically huge problem for the first part but they managed to resolve it for the second one. Total War also kinda resolved that, but every other game i can think of sure going for reduced numbers.
Ok I was agreeing on this video, will finish after this just wanna say that I heard almost 0 complaints about forspoken’s graphpics it was almost all complaints about the story, gameplay,and dialogue. It’s flat out revisionism to say that people were complaining about the graphics
