avoiding any mainstream Hollywood crap. there is so much cinema out there that we’ve never heard of… Hong-Kong 70s 80s (Shaw Brother, Golden Harvest), Italian Giallo and other exploitation stuff (Lucio Fulci!), the Hammer films, Nouvelle Vague, those Sci-Fi flicks from the eastern block, classics by Murnau, Chaplin, Fritz Lang… how about some Jacques Tati?

like with music: the more you open your mind and step away from the mainstream, the more of an infinity of path you’ll find!

I plan on rewatching Pasolini’s The Gospel According to St. Matthew in honor of Holy Week going on right now and Easter being this Sunday. I might post a little film review/essay about it after watching it, so keep an eye out for it.

Pier Paolo Pasolini was an Italian director (controversial to say the least due to his brash and straightforward style of delivering the anti-capitalist message in his works (most prominently and infamously in his final film Salò, or the 120 Days of Sodom) and a vocal supporter of communism. The Gospel According to St. Matthew is one of his most famous works (as the title suggests being an adaptation of the Gospels in the Bible and a portrayal of the life of Jesus through a revolutionary perspective). He was an unlikely person to do such a sincere portrayal (being a communist, an atheist, and gay), but it has been highly regarded both in its day and today. It won the Grand Jury Prize at the 1964 Venice Film Festival (second place behind the Golden Lion, a crowd that was there to boo him actually cheered after the film was screened), was nominated for three Academy Awards (Best Art-Set Decoration, Best Costume Design, Best Score), and was named by L’Osservatore Romano (the daily newspaper of the Vatican) as the best film on Christ ever made.

If you like slapstick, Kung Fu Hustle is a classic along with Shaolin Soccer. Steven Chow is a genius.

what i used to do sometimes:

    • go to the Pirate Bay
    • type in the name of a famous directory you heard of OR a year in the past. ex: “Hitchcock”, “Truffaut”, “Murnau”, “1970”, “1971” etc.

Nearly all John Sayles movies. He’s a based US Marxist that they somehow let write and direct a lot of movies. Lone Star, city of hope, passion fish, eight men out, matewan, secret of roan inish, men with guns… all of them have been extremely good.

I saw Brain Damage (1988) a few days ago. Really felt it had a good premise but so many of the shots could’ve been halved, time-wise, plus they really should’ve had a different guy voice Aylmer bc his voice was way too funny to find legitimately menacing. Also, obligatory weird-ass depiction of sexual assault which seems to be common to cult horror films.

I highly recommend Cuba Feliz, which is free on YouTube. Also, Blue Lagoon is a fun watch strictly because it has really good cinematography and is ironically funny (even though the writing and acting are not great) plus William Daniels (Mr. Feeny) is in it.

      OOF.

I hate depictions of sexual assault like I think you’re describing.

Yeah, it’s really uncomfortable. I wasn’t expecting it, either, so when the scene started I had to roll my eyes in disbelief like 🙄

Currently working my way through the Soviet miniseries “Guest From the Future”. It’s made for children, but sometimes you just need a break from thinking.

Sort of? Each episode is ~1 hour long. They’re long enough to sit down and watch like a movie, but they’re not technically movies.
