I am done working for big tech…I want to use my technical skills for good. So far, I think will apply to the ACLU. Where else?

    01-Join Google.

    02-Get promotion.

03-Continue getting promotion until you are CTO.

04-“Accidentally” delete everything Google owns (including backups).

    05-???

    06-PROFIT!

You forgot the step where they press the communism button to get the “United Soviet States of Google”

Find good parties and cooperatives to offer your skills/labor to. That is what I’m trying to do.

Continue working for big tech, and stop focusing on individual actions. Instead, get organized and do work with a socialist organization. Your position in big tech may help them.

    Just don’t work DoD stuff

No, if OP chooses to work for Meta over LinkedIn, for example, they are a bad person

Yea but that’s still better than Meta. There’s still a difference that’s being made with your choices. Individual actions 100% do matter. I just made an example between 2 popular social media companies. Replace LinkedIn with Pinterest or Snap if you think Microsoft is as bad as Meta

I mean I agree with the broader sentiment yeah :)

I just think companies consolidated with the FAANG/MANGA are pretty bad themselves. I do find it hard to compare Meta and MS in terms of harm, as they are both incredibly harmful

    • As another poster mentioned, academia and medicine are good options.
    • Move to an AES country and provide your talents there.
    • Work gig jobs for a few hours a week, then contribute to important open source projects the rest of the time.

Try to work at a Chinese company. Many may not do good but at least you know their profits and actions are controlled by China. Some have terrible WLB though. Many have offices in USA

This way you can still make a good living too

Bytedance, Tencent, Baidu, Alibaba, XPeng, Nio, etc.

Other decent places include purely technical B2B software products. Databricks, Snowflake Computing, DataDog type companies

Try work in an academic research lab or so (even if as a technician). You will def get a pay cut but the incentives are closer to the ideal. Some are pretty horizontal as far as I’ve seen

I know of a couple that do not take money from DoD, though I don’t feel comfortable sharing

wikimedia, tor project are also good if you are willing to stomach the shitlibbery

I work in tech. I make over 10 times minimum wage. I contribute much of that money, and much of the free time working remote affords me, to my local communist party. I have no illusion that it’s possible to find fulfillment in this industry while capitalism persists; so I get fulfillment working to overthrow it.

The only interesting possibility would be salting at a larger tech company undergoing a union drive; but nothing is on the radar right now.
