It is completely shocking that so many people believe this unfortunate lie. American historians have aggrandized the situation in the European theater of war to the exclusion of basically everything else that was going on at the time. Nobody really talks about the Yugoslavian partisans and their resistance to the Nazis. Nobody talks about the North African theater. They make the French out to be cowards that didn’t resist at all, but the fact is that the French army held out for weeks against the Nazis, even after the French government abandoned Paris. It disgusts me as a historian and really pisses on the bravery of those who stood against the Nazis despite the fact that they knew help wasn’t coming for a long damn time.
