seems fake but honestly if not who cares, people treat the undead in WoW not having visible skin-rips like it’s literally 1984 or more tasteful cleavage in genshin impact like it’s apocalypse now lol. China’s got its values, unsurprisingly many abstracted from socialist-materialist and rooted in traditional Chinese culture, and they should certainly be allowed to protect them if the people want to

Terrifier 2 is apparently making people literally vomit into their popcorn in theatres, from the sheer carnivalesque goriness, and I’ve heard that the movie plain sucks outside the vomit-hype. Mortal Kombat animators are forced to watch actual deaths in order to better simulate the fatalities in their games, some of them have claimed post-traumatic symptoms afterwards. Don’t get me wrong, I love horror and am no prude, but I can’t fault China for drawing the line somewhere. Some of this shit is overkill, pun intended, and the kneejerk reaction against “ban violent video games” types has made good faith discourse surrounding how this hyperviolence affects our psyche nigh impossible.

There was some petition last year to remove a scene from Halloween Kills where Michael Myers kills some firefighters in you know, violent ways saying that it was too brutal and then the same people go and scream at China for censoring nudity. And that Mortal Kombat shit is too much.

I’ve noticed this in a lot of western media recently – going for sheer visceral impact instead of good storytelling. Doing a comedy? Don’t bother with good jokes, just have a lot of juvenile gross-out humor that people will think is “edgy.” A horror movie? Never mind about crafting a suspenseful plot, just throw a lot of gore on the screen. A romance? Don’t bother making the audience care about the characters, just have them look appealing. To me, this is the sign of an industry which is artistically bankrupt at a very fundamental level.

A good horror movie would be about an honest working class person seeing the bills pile up and the landlord coming with an eviction notice.

            Like… Im not even joking.
