I know they tried to destroy Cuba etc, but they were also inconvenient enough to capital to be assassinated by intelligence.

    Weaker second editions of Franklin Roosevelt (who was certainly not perfect himself), in an era where the state apparatus had become hostile to Roosevelt’s legacy. Overall, not particularly redeemable. I’m convinced that a good part of their personality cult comes from them having being assassinated; they’re seen by many well-meaning people as “martyrs,” whose death kept us from being “the America we should have been” – which is of course undialectical and un-materialist.
