It has turned into a month long patriotism test more or less. Everyone in public life wears poppies, including professional athletes, tv presenters, people put poppies in their social media profiles. Not doing so–especially for someone like James McClean–means your in for a lot of abuse basically.
The whole country has gone into full bootlicking mode it seems. This is one of the few anti-monarchy displays I have heard of.
