I think it’s because of how apartments are constructed (at least in capitalist countries). With sound-proof walls and an easy way to get to the ground floor, apartment blocks could be much more comfortable
My building was constructed in the late Soviet Union. Before perestroika if I’m not mistaken. Although I do agree that with proper care and maintenance it could be comfortable.
You may be underestimating how few services exist within American suburbs. It’s likely you don’t have to travel far to get groceries and medicine within your neighborhood, while in the US it’s not uncommon to drive over 30 minutes to find these things, and most suburbs don’t have public transportation, at all.

That kind of depends. Basic stuff I can get within a ten minute walk, although properly stacking is still best done with a car and a 20-30 minute drive.
