I can only speak for myself, but I personally think the whole free speech argument is pointless, and we should be asking whose speech is protected. The US for example protects reactionary speech, and outlaws pro worker speech, and if you say anything against Capitalism, you get deplatformed, fired, put on a watchlist, and in the case of many groups like the Panthers, systematically hunted down and killed.

China has the opposite, they protect pro-worker speech and don’t allow pro-capitalist speech. The only lack of free speech I can think of, is that they ban US surveillance capitalist platforms like Facebook and Twitter, which any good socialist nation should do if they don’t want to capitulate to capitalist media. That the US is still trying color revolutions in places like HK is proof that this is good strategy.

How do communists feel about free speech? Are they okay with suppression of free speech in places like China?

I gotcha. Its certainly a thing with a lot of nuance, and for the most part its easy to distinguish between reactionary speech and other speech. Obvi we’re going to ban anyone saying “kill the gays” or transphobes and the like. Well welcome aboard!

I’m a bit late, but a small reminder that China’s citizens still have access to social media that goes beyond Chinese borders, Weibo for instance. And that Anti-HK protest voices have to take to websites like pornhub to share the vile things protesters are doing because Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Tumblr have been suppressing that in favour reddit’s favourite “winnie the poo man bad, hk democracy now!” bullshit.
