When everyone forgets that there are actual Taiwanese in Taiwan that are suppressed by the ROC Chinese like Amerindians in the USA.

It’s a bit more complicated. The first people to inhabit Taiwan ~30kya were probably related to Negrito Philipinos, but their culture is basically only known from archaeological fragments. Modern indigenous people in Taiwan migrated there ~6kya and became the source of austronesian/polynesian sailing cultures about 3kya.

Han Chinese people began settling on the island around 1600 AD after being driven away a few times previously. Though their colonies tended to consist of transient workers and only supported around 1500 people.

In comes the Dutch East India Company and the Spanish Empire, who promote mass immigration in order to have workers in their colonies, raising the Han population into the tens of thousands. These immigrants from Fujian would become the Hokkien people who now account for 70% of Taiwan’s population. After joint efforts in dealing with secessionists and regional piracy, the Dutch and the newly formed Qing govt re-conquered their Ming era claims and established a formal govt on the island.

The next major migration wave wouldn’t be until the 1950s when the ROC brought about 1 million of their adherents to Taiwan (then and now approx 10-15% of the population). The changes to the power structure of the province incited the Feb 28th Incident in which 20-30k Hokkien and Formosan people were massacred and authoritarian control was established by the ROC.
